Please forgive me if this is a simple problem but I'm new to OOD
duties and am trying to see if sailwave can help us out. At my club
we have a static finish line but move the start line to an
appropriate point on the course as required by wind direction etc.
When it comes to calculating the corrected results (for the handicap
fleet) we use fractions of a lap in the calculations. For example, if
the start line is 1/2 way around the course the number of laps sailed
maybe 5.5. When trialling sailwave I notice that results entry only
allows for integer laps. Is there any way around this - other than
reorganising the way we start?
Thanks,
Jon
Hi Jon,
My assumption has always been that you would never know exactly what the
fractional lap value would be precisely; the norm for average lap racing
(ALR) is to make everybody do an integral number of laps of some well
defined course; so that the correctly times can be computed fairly. What
you could do in the short term is multiply everything by two, so that you're
recording half laps instead of whole laps - I could tweak things to allow
fractional laps if you really wanted that as a feature; let me know. In my
experience your setup is unusual.

Colin J

We ocasionally use a similar set up, our finish line is fixed by the position of club house
and timer system ( the line is always from a point on club house to mark) so to avoid a
downwind start we can move the start line across the lake hence getting a half lap
scenario. I had this very scenario last time I did OOD on our evening series Given nature of
dinghy handicap racing now and differences in speed ( we've got 49er's through to
RS200's in our assymetric fleet) it might be worth adding a check box which you can tick
to allow input of part laps, by default leave it full lap only. Its easy enough to measure the
portion of lap using a GPS with distance calcualtor and taking a RIB round course.
