Personal Handicap Implementation

Stuart Walker's talk at the US Sailng One Design Symposium eleveted
personal handicap implementation up on my to do list for the upcoming
season.

So, What are the ways to implement this.

Basically, I am thinking of exporting last seasons BCR for each race
into excel, taking the median value and using this as a rating for the
season. Not sure how to handle windspeed and the ratings yet.

Obviously you want to be able to toggle between one design, your boat
rating system and your personal handicap system when you score results.

Any thoughts on how to implement this in sailwave for the season.

Thanks
Mark

Hi Colin

One, point and several questions.

If you have created a new series with no scoring rules you cant add a new one. Likewise if you delete scoring rules from a series, you cant add a new one in 1.91 build 2

What is an Overide and how would you set it in a scoring rule?

Could you make all of the sailwave competitor fields available for mapping and loading with a CSV online registration file for importing data into Sailwave.

Could you make the fields for team email and team website, etc HTML hot in the published html file. (I never figured out how to substitute my own website for the ISAF sailor ID) Your current configuration will be the best of all worlds because If I can load the individual links into sailwave using the csv import file of competitors and have Sailwave make the link in the published result file as a hot link, all will be good.

Would it be possible to keep the mapping assignments of a CSV file to the sailwave fields intact when you upgrade. Its a real pain to remap them with every upgrade.

Would the following scenario work for a personal handicap system implementation.

Compute last years personal DPN handicap by averaging the BCR just for DPN for each race of a competitor by exporting to excel

Assemble them into an excel spreadsheet as a competitor personal handicap database.

For each new regatta we have an online registration csv file where I can lookup the competitor and write the Personal handicap into the default DPN field. If I am using a master sailwave file of competitors, then their info and personal handicap rating are already loaded. I just select them for the event.

So,
In sailwave, I set up a scoring system called Personal Handicap DPN where I check "use the Default ratings" to use the DPN Personal handicap that was loaded from the csv file. I dont use the check box for set competitor ratings from ratings files before scoring

You might consider changing the wording to set vessel or class rating from/using rating file before scoring.

I can set up another scoring system called Personal Handicap Windspeed where the default personal handicap windspeed adjusted set of ratings is used if it was loaded.

Finally, I set up another scoring system called USPN Handicap, where I select windspeed adjustments so that Sailwave will use them when a wind velocity is designated for a race and then check the box set competitor ratings from ratings files before scoring Now sailwave will ignore the personal handicap rating in the competitor rating field and grab the Boats ratings from the USPN Rating file in the rating folder and calculate the race.

Thanks Colin

Fixed, thanks, will upload tonight. You should be able to add rules from
the scoring system window for now if you have the show rules check box
ticked.

What is an Overide and how would you set it in a scoring rule?

An override is some part of a scoring system like the discard profile say.
To set an override untick the appropriate inherit box in Edit+ScoringRule
and set the values as need. COmpare with 1.57 fleets whereby you could set
alternative rating system, discard profile etc - its just a generalisation
of that; the same principles apply.

Could you make all of the sailwave competitor fields available
for mapping
and loading with a CSV online registration file for importing data into
Sailwave.

Looking into this now (I thought they were) - the mapping guess stuff is
screwed up too...

Will respond to other Qs later.

Colin

Hi mark,

Have a look at the personal handicap tool in the latest version of Sailwave
on teh website - basically it allows you to set ratings for race N based on
previous races using an expression. Very early days.
