At Burghfield Sailing Club, our Mid-week series is a Pursuit race with
personal handicaps.
This year, we experimented with an automated process which adjusts each
helm's start time based on their results in the series to date. The aim was
to make it completely objective.
I won't go in to too much detail here as the web site contains a page which
explains the system, it also contains the results and a discussion document
which describes the changes we are considering for next year:

In general, the feedback has been very positive and the attendance has been
significantly higher than last year.
For a variety of reasons, I chose to do this with a Perl Script which parses
the SailWave generated HTML but something similar could be done in a spread
sheet easily enough.
