Finally found the thread that explained that personal handicaps are
not yet available - due to mainly so many variations.
Our club used a fixed minute handicap system (for about 90 years!)
until about 10 years ago. We then moved to a percentage of elapsed
time; the theory being that the faster boats could win by more in
longer elapsed time races and as our club is tidal, this happened
nearly every alternate week.
We then moved to a system where every boats handicap changes every
time they finish as race.
Each boats handicap is calculated as a percentage of the fastest
boat in the fleet; so if you won your handicap of 100% would be
added to your accumulated results & then used to calculate a
handicap. Conversely, if you sailed half as fast as the fastest
boat, your handicap of 50% would be added to your score.
In the case of mixed fleets, we apply the yardstick to determine the
outright placings (for club champions), then apply the personal
handicap to determine "handicap winners".
