Personal Handicaps

I have now been using Sailwave with the Napier Sailing Club in New
Zealand for a number of years, though continue to be frustrated by
the application of personal handicaps.

Ay present these are calculated on an excel spreadsheet and updated
at the start of each series sailed by each class throughout the
season.

This spreadsheet is large and not particularly robust, but does
produce and update accurate handicaps on the basis of the last 5 or 7
races with the best and worst results dropped.

The disadvantage is that the finishing times in each class have to be
entered on a weekly basis.

Can anyone answer the following questions :

Can Sailwave deal with personal handicaps and update them on a
continious basis once a provisional rating has been entered

If this is the case is there a simple and straight forward
explanation of how to accomplish this.

Is there a simple mathematical explanation, as many references in
this forum appear to use some rather esoteric maths.

Any assistance or explanation would be greatly appreciated.
