I have just downloaded Sailwave to see if we might use it at our club. I tried running a personal handicap series in parallel with our normal series last year and it was very popular. But working out the handicaps in Excel is a pain, so I am looking for a better way. I have been calculating a Performance Indicator (as advised by the RYA) which is essentially the difference between an individauls performance and the average performance for that race. Is there a way to achieve this using Sailwave? Thanks.
Search for 'Back Calculated Ratings'
You can copy them in an Excel sheet after every race, further average them as you want...

you can control how BCR is calculated too - i did
a tweak for somebody last year - not sure if they used it though - went
quiet.

Explanation in the help files and tips.
BCR is the rating you should give to a boat to rank her with same corrected time as the winner.
You use them for the next race, then calculate BCR again and average as you feel it.

Rob,
The BCR is the rating that each boat would need to tie with the winner based on their actual elapsed time. The nomenclature is a bit obscure (at least to me) but you could describe it as each boat's "rating to win."
If your rating system is "Corrected Time = ElapsedTime x TimeCorrectionFactor" (or CT = ET x TCF) then presumably your BCR formula would be "BCR = CT/ET." Your BCR would then be the TCF that would tie your boat with the winning boat. For a different rating system formula you would have a different BCR formula.
From an earlier message it seems that the Back Calculated Ratings (or BCR) may not be exactly what you want. "Back Corrected" might imply that the BCR is the rating that a boat sailed to in that race, which it is NOT. In essence, it measures the performance of the 1st-place boat or more accurately, compares the performance of each boat to that of the 1st-place boat, which may or may not have been normal. For a more meaningful comparison, you would want to compare to the middle boat - which I believe is what you said you wanted to do. I don't know if SailWave can do that as I don't use personal handicaps myself. But, the raw data is obviously there.

Read BCR = CTref/ET, CTref being the CT of a reference boat. (for TCF / TMF ratings)

Agree.
The personal rating (handicap) should be on the middle performing boat. A simple excel with the averages of all BCR and then use the mean of the range. This will give you the fleets range and average. Then either add or subtract from this mean score.
If a range of BCR from the original YS was from 0.2 to 11.5 then the mean would be around 5.5. The worst performer is Yardstick plus the diff from their BCR to the average (6). And so on.
