Personal handicaps

We allow helms to sail in different classes of boat within a series sailed on a personal handicap basis. Although a manual rating can be entered on each race, are there are plans to have a field that is calculated so that we could set an adjustment factor that is taken into account with the boat PY to calculate the corrected time?

By 'field that is calculated' do you mean 'calculated on the basis of earlier results'? Having been there and got the T-shirt etc., I'd say don't bother. IMO the sole reason for doing PH in that way is that it's 'transparent' (or should be), but IME not 'fairest' due to the inherent sparcity of data used in the calculation. I prefer to use the 'golf handicap' approach of setting PHs at the start of the season using input from the fleet captains; then only adjust them if someone is clearly significantly faster / slower due, for example, to equipment changes or illness.

We are trying what you describe as the golf club method ie a fixed handicap for the season. The only niggle is that some people will sail different boats (depending in whether they have a crew!). It would be good just to amend the class and allow the program to calculate the weighted PY. I realise ratings can be manually set per race but there’s room for human error doing it that way

Ah, sounds like your SIs consider a series entry as a property of the 'helm' - big mistake, IME

We consider a helm + class combination as one entry, if they decide to add/subtract a crew member then that's a different entry (appreciate that this might be different for a keel boat club).

Back to the OP: IIRC PH calculation has been a 'nice to do' for Colin, but I suspect that Olympic scoring / Flight scoring etc. has always got in the way

Ah well. He can add us to the list of clubs that would appreciate the additional facility. In the meantime we will knuckle down, use the program as is, and hope human error doesn’t creep in too often!

Many thanks
