I have been told that you can calculate personal handicaps using sailwave but I have no idea how to do this, can anyone help?
Also I have been given the latest PY’s from the RYA, there are a few differences in particular to the standard rig and radial rig lasers, its not a big change but it has changed so if anyone knows how to get the new PY’s up on the system I can send them over.
I would be interested in what you mean by latest PY's from RYA, as
they normally publish update information at the beginning of March
each year to coincide with the Dinghy Show here in the UK.
I can provide you with a rating file for Sailwave containing
Portsmouth Numbers from the RYA pulished in March 2010. I usually
update the file each year and get Colin to make available in the
resource section of the Sailwave web site. For some reason it doe
snot appear to have happened last year.
I will leave others who have more experience on personal handicap
calculations to provide pointers. However, Sailwave can produce what
are called BCR (Back Calculated Ratings) but there has been debate
on the way they are calculated and to the best of my knowledge the
procedure is not as laid out by the RYA.
Kind regards,
Huw

The value BCR provided by Sailwave can be used as an aid to personal handicaps.
A simplistic method is to use an average of BCR (back calculated rating) or Rating to Win values for a competitor from a few previous races to apply to subsequent races.
However, this can result in everyone’s personal handicap getting larger and larger over time. Statistical analysis is required in order to keep the mean set of ratings for all competitors the same. Methods of doing this have been suggested by others - if you can do a search on such messages in the SW usergroup.

I have tried to put the new ratings on to sailwave but it is not reading them. When i open the document you sent me it opens in excel as does the previous rating system (the 2009) but I am not sure why but the 2010 just does not want to play ball when I remove the 2009 and only try and use 2010. when I go to the boat section and go to select a boat it comes up with a blank screen.
Because of this I have put the 2009 ratings back on for now.

Sorry to hear you are having difficulties. Yes both files will be
opened in Excel if you just double click on them as that is the
default application for .CSV files.
Just checking a couple of things:
You did put a copy of the file I sent with my previous email
in to the Ratings folder
Are you using a rating system with Sailwave file you are using
to produce the race & series results. If you have created a
new Sailwave results file it will by default not be using a
rating system but be expecting the series to a level rating
series, e.g. class racing with no handicapping involved.
To check 2 open the Sailwave file click on the Scoring System button
on the tool bar then click the Rating System tab. If the radfio
button is set alongside None then you will not see any ratings when
you click the wavy lines alongside the class filed for a competitor.
Hope this helps.
Kind regards,
Huw
