Personal Handicaps

Has anyone implemented Personal Handicaps using other than TCF ratings (e.g., PHRF Time on Time and PHRF Time on Distance)? If so, would you be willing to share yourSWPH.xls file? I think I would need to add 2 columns to convert PHRF to TCF and then from TCF to PHRF which it no real problem. For PHRF TOT, I believe the A and B factors used in the conversions would have to be manually entered since there appears to be no way to provide that information. For normal PHRF Time On Distance or a custom rating system that uses distance (e.g., Seconds Per Mile), there does not appear to be a way to get the distance directly from Sailwave either.

Also, are there any recommendations for cell L6 for a graduated adjustment?

Thanks,

Tom Owen

Hi Tom,

So you are not using the SWHelper which is part of the NHC am I correct.?

I think this is the way to go - If you can use this and if you could supply a sample blw file and let me know fields you need - I could probably add those quite quickly for you

Jon,

I tried to incorporate NHC, but there were several issues:

  • We use PHRF Time on Time for PHRF racing nights and Portsmouth rating for centerboard/dinghy racing nights. We may need to use PHRF Time on Distance for some “invitational races”. NHC requires TCF which would require moving from PHRF to TCF which will confuse our racers. Also, I do not think PHRF TOD is supported either.

  • We have multiple fleets (Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker) for PHRF racing and want an Overall composite of both fleets. We have developed with your help the Time Per Mile (Seconds per Mile) that uses the corrected time divided by the course distance (each fleet may have different courses, not just a different number of laps) to rank the finishes. Centerboard just uses the Portsmouth handicaps for all racers. I do not think this is supported in NHC. At least I could not find a way to make it work. I have incorporated NHC into each separate fleet successfully.

Attached are the PHRF results from the Fall series last year and my attempt at NHC. Some of the races have suggested adding Personal Handicapping (similar to Golf). I would like to see how the Personal Handicaps (or NHC) would affect the results and make recommendations for this year.

Either method for adjustable handicapping would be acceptable.

Thanks,

Tom

Hi Tom,

I wasn’t thinking of you using NHC itself but using the external mode to produce your own solution.

I appreciate that it won’t fit exactly your requirement currently. But as the technology behind it is better than the SWPH, I could enhance this to add the features that you need if they are not too many.

Jon,

There would be 2 items to consider:

  • Support for PHRF TOT and TOD handicaps (This could be readily expanded to other handicaps as well).

  • Providing additional race parameters to the spreadsheet (e.g., individual/fleet/class/etc. distance, PHRF TOT A and B Values, etc.)

Thanks,

Tom
