Hi,
My club has in the past only used yardstick handicaps. We now want to do personal handicaps mainly so the juniors all get a chance to win if they sail well (we have a 3 time world champ in the junior fleet that wins every race). However we still have some mixed fleets such as Laser full rigs and radials, etc. We currently use the VYC for yardsticks.
I’ve been experimenting on the results from a recent 5 race regatta to see if I can get some handicap results. I don’t seem to be able to get a PH for the first race based on races happening after that. Also I’m not totally sure how it is being calculated and how the different options vary from each other.
Could you please give me some advise on how to go about implementing personal handicaps.
Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,
I suppose the first question to ask is what rules do you want to use for creating the Personal Handicap. Sailwave is capable of doing almost anything with the aid of an Excel template. It has the NHC capability built in and there is an example file for this included with Sailwave - have a read about this (See the Sailwave website) and see if this is the sort of thing you want. NHC uses TCF by default. The internal mode only works with TCF but if you use the external mode it does conversion of ratings so it can be used with PY or others.

Jon,
I don’t think I know enough about handicapping yet to know which rules I want to utilise. My number one aim is that the person who sails the most better than they normally do should get first. Also possibly a slight advantage to the middle and back of the fleet as it is mostly for juniors and the tailenders could get some reward from handicap scores.
I couldn’t find anything on the website about NHC. Also is there a glossary as I don’t know what NHC or some of the other acronyms? Could you please point me to where there is more info on NHC?
Thanks,
Mike

Look at http://www.rya.org.uk/racing/Pages/NHC.aspx#
This system can be used for dinghies as well, even though the RYA's focus for this system is for keelboats.
