I am a new user. I understand a simple race without any handicaps. If I want to insert the boat handicap, how do I change the scoring to reflect the handicap rating?

You will need to do a number of things to score based on handicaps. Firstly you will need to ensure the correct rating is listed in every entry. Then when adding results you need to insert either start and finish times or the duration of the competitors race (elapsed time). If it’s an average lap race you can also add in number of laps at this point.
The other thing to check is that sailwave is set to use the PY calculations when scoring. I’m not at my computer now so can’t remember exactly where it is but it is likely under settings somewhere. May be under series properties.
Then it’s as easy as clicking score series. Sailwave does the hard work for you and calculates corrected times and sorts into the correct order.

Further to the response from Chris, you will find the option to set up the Rating system under the heading Scoring System and then select Rating.
Make sure you have downloaded the Rating file you need from the Sailwave web site, they have recently updated the PY rating files…

You need to set the rating system to RYA Portsmouth in the Edit Scoring system
I suggest you have a look at some of the examples that are included with the Sailwave install.
There are also quite a few Youtube videos which you may find helpful if you search Youtube for Sailwave
