Portsmouth Wind Indexed Ratings

I'm still having trouble understanding how to set up the program for
Portsmouth wind indexed ratings. I tried the FAQ explanation but it
didn't make sense to me.
Please help.

Hi there. To use wind indexed values, the first thing you have to do is enter the handicap numbers into the rating library. "Default value" is the D-PN number, and then in the "wind indexed values" you put the D-PN, followed by all the rest of the numbers, seperated by commas.
The first number is the default for if you aren't using windspeeds, the second number is force 0-1, third is force 2-3, etc.
For example, a Laser's wind indexed values box would say:
91.4,93.8,92.3,91.2,88.4
Once you have entered the ratings, go into Edit Scoring System, click Race Scoring and then on the bottom right click "Enable wind strength indexing"
In this box you can put whatever you want to use to tell you what the wind strengths are. The first one will be if you aren't using wind strengths, second will be the 2nd number you entered in the rating library, etc.
For example, I have mine set to say "don't use,Force 0-1, Force 2-3, Force 4, Force 5-9". Using the Laser numbers, Force 0-1 will be 93.8, force 2-3 will be 92.3, force 4 will be 91.2, and force 5-9 will be 88.4
Now all I have to do to use the wind strength adjustments is pick the force number from the wind strength box when I do an "Edit Race".
         I hope this helps you.

Hi Dave,

A nice explanation; I would just add that you can leave the D-PN off the
front of the list - then you don't need the 'don't use' wind range - or do
you find this useful in some circumstances...?

Colin

Colin,
I didn't know that. I haven't used it yet but since I've already entered in all over the place, I think I'll leave it in "just in case."

Hi Dave,

Well, it's a good idea really - allowing you to specify a wind 'strength'
that means 'use the D-PN'.

This sort of thing has come up a few times. Users are abstracting 'wind
indexed' to mean 'indexed' and defining wind 'strengths' appropriately -
e.g. 'the rating for races 4, 5 and 6'... neat...

Regards,
Colin

PS: sorry for no progress on merging etc; bogged down with real work
unfortunately.

Colin,
Don't lose too much sleep over the lack of progress. I understand that you have other things you need to do. Luckily, I have been getting the race results done faster and making them available than the race results guy did last year, so my fellow club members don't complain too much, except when I beat them. <G> I would like to have the merge facility before November though if it's possible so that it'll be easier to figure out the final results in time for the AGM where the awards etc are presented.

Okay........Colin, I'm pretty sure I did it just like you said, but.
After I input all the race data and then -score series- I get error
message "missing rating for competitor".
For each competitor I have left the "Default rating" box blank, and
in the "Wind indexed ratings" box I have inputted the Portsmouth
ratings....63.3,69.0, etc. corresponding to the wind strengths.
In the "Edit Race" window I can select the "wind strength" I want to
use...0-1,2-3, etc.
There doesn't seem to be a connection between the rating and the
elapsed time to do the calculations for corrected time then compute
finish positions.

Billy,
It is MUCH easier to use handicaps if you just enter them into the Rating Library and then simply choose the class of boat for the competitor. This has always worked for me and then if you have another competitor in the same class it is no trouble at all to enter the handicaps.

Hi Billy

Okay........Colin, I'm pretty sure I did it just like you said, but.

After I input all the race data and then -score series- I get error
message "missing rating for competitor".<

Sailwave requires the default rating value to be entered for handicap
racing. I agree it's not actually necessary in your situation but WI
ratings were added after default ratings and the test survived. Enter D-PNs
in the box and you should be OK. I'll remove the restriction ASAP (if WO
ratings are defined) but Sailwave is in bits at the moment and I can't
upload anything.

There doesn't seem to be a connection between the rating and the

elapsed time to do the calculations for corrected time then compute
finish positions.<

Sailwave gets the elapsed time (Edit + Result) - looks up the appropriate WI
rating (Edit + Competitor) via the wind strength (Edit + Race) and
calculates the corrected time as per the rating system (Edit +
ScoringSystem). The Corrected time is saved back into the result detail and
'Appendix A' applied to compute the race positions and series positions.

$ The rating system is selected (or defined using a custom expression) once
per series (Edit + ScoringSystem).

$ A list of valid wind strengths representing the wind indexed ratings are
defined once per series. (Edit + Scoring System).

$ Wind indexed ratings are defined once per competitor. (Edit + Competitor).

$ Actual wind strengths are defined once per race (Edit + Race).

$ Elapsed times are defined once per competitor per race (Edit + Result).

Colin
