Hi Ian,
Given that your request is an extension of an existing general
tool then yes I would be happy to do it.
I'll make sure there are suitable functions like gt() etc to do
what you need.
What I often refuse to do is ah-hoc stuff.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the series scoring
options on Sailwave don’t appear to permit my club’s standard
scoring method. I think it would be easy to incorporate, but due
to its absence we’re about to invent our own system (You’ll
rightly laugh at that but we have an optimistic Racing Secretary).
I’d rather we used Sailwave with its enormous flexibility and
range of options.
In the discard formula you allow variables S and R. for races
sailed and races in series. We need another variable, call it C,
which is the number of races competed in by the boat being scored.
We also need a corresponding option to score a series by average
points over races competed in (result not DNC) rather than total
points
Our system then uses a formula something like
“(s-c)+gt(c,18)*(c-17)/3” (I hope GT() works like that). In words
only races the boat competed in count, and of those once 18 races
have been completed 1 race in every further 3 may be discarded.
This system has been used for decades to deal with the problem of
moderate turnouts in long series - otherwise we have to allow
relatively huge numbers of discards or only get a handful of
qualifiers - and boats joining mid-season don’t get results. We
see this as an ever increasing issue in club racing which more
clubs will need to address.
Incidentally, in the discard expression test screen the value of R
appears to be ignored - If I set the formula to just “r” the no of
discards is zero whatever value I set for r. It does of course
work in real scoring.

Hi Colin,
I am new to Sailwave and am very impressed with its capabilities, but like Ian, we could also use the ability to compute a fair score for a multi-week series where not everyone sails every week. Our long-standing manual method computes each competitor's score for the series as the average of his points for each race he competed in, with a minimum number of races needed to qualify.
We use a minimum of 66% of the races in the series as the qualification cutoff. I got the qualification part to work with a Qualification profile of
1,2,2,3,4,4,5,6,6
but it appears there is no way to throw out a number of races that depends on the number you competed in, or alternatively to have the average computation ignore DNC races.
Looks like a great program otherwise!
Thanks for your help

Jim,
We score our long multiweek series as you describe with qualification percentage of 60% and a granting of ones average score if he is unable to race.
The way you accomplish this is quite simple. Edit you DNC scoring code and select “average of (some of points for all races) + N points”. This will give the member who does not race his average score.

Thanks Peter,
I think that solves it. One modification: I set
DNC = Average of (sum of points for all non-DNC races) + 0 points
then average all the scores for the series result.
A little algebra proves that this is the same as discarding all the competitor’s DNC races then averaging the remaining scores.
Also I see I can set the Qualification formula to (s * .66) + 1 rather than the series in my OP. The need for spaces around the operators had me confused for awhile.
Thanks again for your help.
