I have previously successfully created and used sailwave to record series results and obtain placings for competitors (or DNQ for those that did not enter sufficient races).
I have just completed three series results files, using the same race scoring and series scoring settings as before. The rankings correctly show DNQ for those that entered insufficient races, but any competitors who did qualify are all showing ranked as 1st.
Does anyone know why?

There can be a few reasons for this. One simple one is that the `Score Series' button hasn't been clicked. You didn't say if you are scoring on place or time (handicap). Incorrect handicap setup could also cause this. As Huw suggested, providing your SW file would permit the settings to be checked.

Your responses have led me to the solution.
"Score Series" had been clicked after the first race, when no-one had yet entered sufficient races to qualify, so were all DNQ. After subsequent races, "Rescore" was clicked.
However, checking the "Score Series" button again, I found that "Sort results by field after scoring" had been (inadvertently) ticked.
Clearing the "tick" has resolved the problem.
