Problem with Flight Assignments

Hi all,

Peter van Muden and I are here at the Laser Worlds. We encountered an interesting problem yesterday.

We we had a light wind day yesterday, so the second race for one of the flights was called off. We unscored the other flight so that we had what looked like an unsailed race. They are making up that race (race 4) as I type.

So, empty race, and we needed to assign flights for the next two races, 5 & 6.

Went through the normal procedure, told Sailwave to assign flights to those races, which it did normally. Unfortunately, the flights that were displayed in the “Flights” column were the flights for race 4, not 5 and 6.

The only way we could get the correct flights to appear for races 5 and 6 in the Flights column was to add a couple of fake scores in race 4, and then go through the flight assignment (without rescoring, naturally!).

Not sure how much sense this makes, but it clearly wasn’t the behavior we were expecting!

Has anyone else ever seen this?

Andy

Hi Andy,

AS I said in an earlier private email, I will have a look at this.

To help that, do you have a copy of the file at the point you had
the problem? If so could I have a copy.

Kind regards,
Huw

Hi Andy - Don’t quite understand what you are saying.

You have completed 3 races with lets say 2 flights (could be more). The 4th race one flight raced lets say Blue and the other (Yellow) didn’t. So you removed the results for Blue. But now my question is if the flighting for 5 and 6 was different from race 4 how did you determine the flighting for races 5 and 6 if you hadn’t completed race 4?

One thing that may help is the Tools set competitor field if you use Flight you get some additional options to change for different races

Not saying this is the solution as I don’t fully understand the issue at present

I knew this was going to be hard to put into a post!

Okay, let’s see if I can make a better explanation:

We finished races 1-3, both flights. Race 4 finished Yellow flight, but Blue was called off. So, the RC took the decision to sail the remaining Blue flight start today, which would complete race 4. Since we needed to publish new flights for races 5 and 6 yesterday, the agreement was to do it based on the overall results from the first 3 races, leaving race 4 blank.

The result was that Sailwave calculated the flights for races 5 and 6 correctly, but put the previously determined flights for races 3 and 4 into the Flights field. With a little experimentation we determined that the reason was that there weren’t any results in race 4, so I’m guessing that Sailwave just looked for the flights in the first unsailed race it found, and used that for the Flights field. It makes perfect sense, but it wasn’t the behavior that we needed. So, we put a couple of fake results into race 4 and calculated flights again, and the flights for race 5 were shown in the flights field.

Clear as mud?

Hi Andy that makes sense now. The bit I was missing was “the agreement was to do it based on the overall results from the first 3 races” Yes you are correct I checked through the source code and It is looking for unsailed races to determine the flight. I can think of a couple of ways round it but your idea of putting a temporary result in for race 4 is as easy if not easier than the other solutions.
