Problems with manually entering prizes

Hi

I have been using sailwave for some time now and are now using version 1.95 build 11.

In the past I have been able to entre prizes manually however this function now seems not to be available and itf I open the prizes screen the software freezes and has to be re-started. I need this function as we allocate prizes within series as well as at the end.

Also is there a way of calculating a PY handicap from boat and sail dimensions & weights etc?

Suggest you look at the Byron website: http://www.byronsoftware.org.uk/bycn/handcalc.htm

Many boats are lsited, far more than on the RYA PY lsit.

If the boat is not already listed , you can send them basic measurements and they will calculate a PY for you.

Basically it uses the American PHRF formula and then converts it to PY. Don’t think it aspplies to dinghies.

It is not quite compatible for two main reasons:

  1. PY is a performance based system giving an average. PHRF is a formula based system (albeit a formula derived from performance data) so anomalies will arise.

  2. It takes no account of planing ability. Thus a J80 will be handicapped as if it sails in displacement mode only. That would be difficult to beat.

Finally, if a boat has an IRC certificate you can use the formula: PY = 860/TCF

The 860 is derived from comparing a number of boats which have standard PYs and are Primary or Secondary Yardsticks.

Dave,
It is a while since I used v1.95b11. However I was using v2.00b4 last week at the RYA Volvo Youth National Championships and I had no problems with the Prize function but I was using the Best placed finisher for each prize I had setup and allocated the competitors too.

If you would like to send me a copyof you .BLW file I will take a look using both v1.95b11 and v2.00b4. Yes I have copies of the majority of Sailwave versions stashed away.
