I am new to SW. And to ECHO, the Irish performance based system of handicapping.
I understand SW can calculate results using ECHO.
But I am not clear whether it does so using the Progressive version of ECHO ( I think it is referred to as P - ECHO ) where the TCF’s are updated automatically by the program after each race.
Or if it uses what I believe is the original version ( referred to as just ECHO ) where the TCF’s are updated manually from time to time.
Sailwave supports Progressive Handicaps, under NHC which is the RYA version of the Progressive ECHO.
Sailwave supports the NHC built in and also the External or Custom mode.
Using the internal version is very easy. The external is still easy but not quite so easy. The way it works is it uses a template for Excel. So you need to have Excel installed to use it
If you score with NHC External or custom selected, then it automatically starts Excel and loads the template and automatically populates Excel with data from Sailwave. You can then step through a race one at a time or automatically through all and the results of the Excel calculations automatically update Sailwave so there is no skill required to use it.
Now the powerful feature is that you can create your own templates (the NHC ones are supplied and you can edit them). So assuming you know the rules for ECHO progressive it could do the calculations. I’m not aware of any where these are published.
So basically Sailwave can do the calculations but you would need to supply the template or modify the NHC version to the ECHO rules. Let me know if you want to discuss further.

By “rules” I assume you mean the formulae / spreadsheet calculations that P - ECHO uses to automatically recalculate the new handicaps after each race?
I’m doubtful if I have the expertise to create templates etc.
But as a first step I’ll see if I can find out what the ECHO rules are and have emailed the Irish Sailing Association accordingly.
If anyone on the forum has contact details for any of the group of volunteers who apparently created the ECHO system then please help me to get in touch if you can, so that I can ask them direct, which may be more effective than going via the ISA.

I have some templates which are very close to ECHO as it was several years ago. But I know they don’t produce exactly the same results and I would love to see the rules/formula that need to be used.
Producing templates is just a skill of using excel formulae it doesn’t require programming skills as such, although I guess it helps a little.
I guess the question is does it have to be ECHO - can it be NHC, what is your requirements?

I have tried to post a topic about this on the blog, but although I pressed send the topic does not appear.
At my Club we have just awarded points in race 5, based on average points in the previous 4, so we used code RDGb as this seems to be the right basis. We expected this not to adjust the points of the other boats in race 5, but Sailwave appears to have adjusted them. There is not an option in the codes to adjust or not to adjust. Have we done something incorrectly please ?
If you would like to send me your Sailwave file I will take a
look and see if I can spot the problem.
If you go to Scoring system and select the Scoring codes tab,
followed by double clicking on code RDGb to open the set-up of
the scoring code. Once this window is open click on the Properties
tab and the last check box above the Format box should be ticked.
Kind regards,
Huw
