Publishing via Email

Colin,

An interesting difference between my two systems but both still fail.

Windows 2000 Professional +SP4 + hotfixes gives the message box information
reported in my previous email.

Window XP Professional +SP2 gives the message box information given earlier
PLUS your debug information which lists what I was expecting to see on the
command line of BLAT.

Windows 2000 PC is running AVG V7.x antivirus software with latest updates
Windows XP is running McAfee Antivirus, Spam Filter and Firewall

Kind regards,
Huw

Colin,

Guessed that's what you meant. Downloaded & installed.

All fields in SMTP tab of Global Options filled out except port filed and
the CMD window stays on screen slightly longer, sufficient for me to see
that BLAT is running but just as it seems that other text is being put in
the window it closes and is followed by the message documented earlier.
Having looked at the BLAT web site there is an option to create a log file,
is it possible for you to make use of this option by including a check box,
at least whilst I try helping to track the problem down.

See you in the bar on Tuesday evening.

Kind regards,
Huw

Huw, before I do that, download build 11 again (I just updated it) and when
blat fails it will show you the command line used to invoke it. Paste this
into a DOS window to execute it by hand and you should see a decent error
message. I have yet to find a way to get these erros into Sailwave...

Colin,

Just run the BLAT command manually in a command prompt window; had to type
it in manually as I could not cut & paste from Message Window :frowning:

First attempt failed as there was a space in the BLAT command path but it
ran when I surrounded by double quotes. The message I got back from my ISP
SMTP server is

"The SMTP server did not accept Auth PLAIN value. Is Your passwork
correct?" - that is how it was spelt!

I then took out the user name & password options on the command line and it
worked. I have checked my Outlook settings and I am not using any
authentication when uploading emails to my ISP SMTP server. I think that
they allow email messages from IP addresses they allocate and reject others.

But your checking currently does not allow the username & password fields to
blank

So in summary for my circumstances I think you need to do the following:
put double quotes round the full path to the BLAT command
allow me to have the username & password fields blank

Hope this helps.
Kind regards,
Huw

Colin,

That should have been HTM files not BLW files

But also there are other differences between Windows 2000 and Windows XP,
don't you love Microsoft.

The message box listing the debug information in Windows 2000 allows me to
cut and paste to a command prompt window as well as there being a button
available to copy the full message to the clipboard but I can do neither of
these things in Windows XP.

The cut & paste of the full BLAT command string in Windows 2000 did not
throw a wobbly with the full path name to the BLAT command, i.e. no double
quotes around the string but when I manually typed he command string in
Windows XP, because I cannot cut & paste the debug information under XP, the
command interpreter through out an error message; but I then called the
command line back and put double quotes round the full path to the BLAT
command and it worked.

Anyway enough for tonight, I don't know about you but my eyes have had it.

Kind regards,
Huw

With 194 b11 and, in global options, the server set to mail.sailwave.com,
the user set to pop.press, the port set to 25 and the from address set to
sailwave.com, I sit at the "DOS" screen for about 30 seconds and then go
into the endless loop of error messages. When I close the "DOS" window, I
get the "there was a problem." message and the following debug info:

Version: 1.94 Build 11
Installed: 07/05/06 18:07:00

···

Date: July 05, 2006
Time: 6:10:01 PM
There was a problem sending your email. Please check all your details are
correct. Another alternative is that the SMTP server is currently offline.

Debug info:-

C:\PROGRA~1\Sailwave\blat.exe "C:\DOCUME~1\Willy\LOCALS~1\Temp\blw8A.htm"
-to "will05@optonline.net" -subject "2006 Chelsea Yacht Club A Series data"
-f "press@sailwave.com" -server "mail.sailwave.com" -port "25" -u
"pop.press" -pw "xxxxxxxx" -attacht
"C:\DOCUME~1\Willy\LOCALS~1\Temp\blw89.htm"

With global options correctly, as far as I know, set to my own email
client's settings, I don't get the loop or error messages, but I get the
"there was a problem" message with the following debug info:

Version: 1.94 Build 11
Installed: 07/05/06 18:07:00
Date: July 05, 2006
Time: 6:15:45 PM
There was a problem sending your email. Please check all your details are

Debug info:-

C:\PROGRA~1\Sailwave\blat.exe "C:\DOCUME~1\Willy\LOCALS~1\Temp\blw8C.htm"
-to "will05@optonline.net" -subject "2006 Chelsea Yacht Club A Series data"

"rewillg" -pw "xxxxxxx" -attacht "C:\DOCUME~1\Willy\LOCALS~1\Temp\blw8B.htm"

I've x'd out the password in both cases. The sailwave password was likely
mine rather than yours.

Both cases were "send now" and my SMTP server seems to definitely be online
and working.

When I tried the "send later" approach, I get this message:

Installed: 07/05/06 18:07:00
Date: July 05, 2006
Time: 6:28:37 PM
This operation calls the Windows MAPI interface. It can take a few seconds;
long enough to start thinking nothing has happened...

Followed by this message:

Date: July 05, 2006
Time: 6:27:51 PM

Hi Colin,

I am going through the options now and documenting my findings.

FYI - so far I have found
that if all the fields in the SMTP tab of Global Options are left blank the
Send Email now option calls Outlook and puts the message in the Outbox
that putting my ISP SMTP server address in the Global Options | SMTP field I
see what appears to be a CMD window flash briefly on the screen (to short to
read anything), followed by a message box with the words "There was a
problem sending your email. Please check all your details are correct.
Another alternative is that the SMTP server is offline." The SMTP server is
not off line as I am sending other messages from within Outlook OK.

I will continue and write my findings up later tonight or tomorrow.

Kind regards,
Huw

PS - see you next week at Weymouth

Hi Huw,

Will I have similar problems if I try to use information set in Sailwave

Global options, but if I leave all the mail related fields blank I can send
an email out via Outlook 2000. I will do a test with Outlook 2002 later
this evening when I can get my son of the newer system.<<

The global options are only used when using the "send email now" publishing
option. They are not used for the "send emai llater" option because your
email client is responsible in that case.

What problems do you get trying to use the "send email now" option?

some stmp servers like the fully qualified user name like

got a message that said "the SMTP server does not require auth login. Are

Date: July 05, 2006
Time: 6:10:01 PM
There was a problem sending your email. Please check all your details are
correct. Another alternative is that the SMTP server is currently offline.

Debug info:-

C:\PROGRA~1\Sailwave\blat.exe "C:\DOCUME~1\Willy\LOCALS~1\Temp\blw8A.htm"
-to "will05@optonline.net" -subject "2006 Chelsea Yacht Club A Series data"
-f "press@sailwave.com" -server "mail.sailwave.com" -port "25" -u
"pop.press" -pw "xxxxxxxx" -attacht
"C:\DOCUME~1\Willy\LOCALS~1\Temp\blw89.htm"

With global options correctly, as far as I know, set to my own email
client's settings, I don't get the loop or error messages, but I get the
"there was a problem" message with the following debug info:

Version: 1.94 Build 11
Installed: 07/05/06 18:07:00
Date: July 05, 2006
Time: 6:15:45 PM
There was a problem sending your email. Please check all your details are
correct. Another alternative is that the SMTP server is currently offline.

Debug info:-

C:\PROGRA~1\Sailwave\blat.exe "C:\DOCUME~1\Willy\LOCALS~1\Temp\blw8C.htm"
-to "will05@optonline.net" -subject "2006 Chelsea Yacht Club A Series data"

"rewillg" -pw "xxxxxxx" -attacht "C:\DOCUME~1\Willy\LOCALS~1\Temp\blw8B.htm"

I've x'd out the password in both cases. The sailwave password was likely
mine rather than yours.

Both cases were "send now" and my SMTP server seems to definitely be online
and working.

When I tried the "send later" approach, I get this message:

long enough to start thinking nothing has happened...

Kind regards,
Huw

The global options are only used when using the "send email now" publishing

What problems do you get trying to use the "send email now" option?

mine rather than yours.

Both cases were “send now” and my SMTP server seems to definitely be
online

and working.

When I tried the “send later” approach, I get this message:

This operation calls the Windows MAPI interface. It can take a few seconds;

long enough to start thinking nothing has happened…

Followed by this message:

But nothing shows up in the Outbox.

Hope this helps.

Another alternative is that the SMTP server is offline." The SMTP server
is

not off line as I am sending other messages from within Outlook OK.

I will continue and write my findings up later tonight or tomorrow.

Kind regards,

Huw

PS - see you next week at Weymouth

Hi Huw,

Will I have similar problems if I try to use information set in
Sailwave

Global options, but if I leave all the mail related fields blank I can send

an email out via Outlook 2000. I will do a test with Outlook 2002 later

this evening when I can get my son of the newer system.<<

The global options are only used when using the “send email now”
publishing

option. They are not used for the “send emai llater” option because
your

email client is responsible in that case.

What problems do you get trying to use the “send email now” option?

Hi Colin,

I have downloaded the Sailwave version 1.94b11 from the sailwave.com web
site at approx 07:30 BST on 6th July 2006 and installed.

Following my tests I think you are almost there.

The output from the CMD window is:-
U:\Users\huw>S:\PROGRA~1\Sailwave\blat.exe
"C:\DOCUME~1\huw\LOCALS~1\Temp\blw27C
.htm" -to "valid user name here" -subject "2006 Poole Open data" -f "valid
user name here" -server "valid ISP server FQDN" -port "25" -u "" -pw
"" -attacht "C
:\DOCUME~1\huw\LOCALS~1\Temp\blw278.htm"
Blat v2.5.0 w/GSS encryption (build : Sep 14 2005 22:46:29)

Blat saw and processed these options, and found fault with the last one...
-to shows my entered valid user name here
    -subject 2006 Poole Open data
-f shows my entered valid user name here
-server shows my valid entered ISP SMTP server address here
    -port 25
    -u
Not enough arguments supplied for option: -u
Blat found fault with: -u

-u <username> : username for AUTH LOGIN (use with -pw)

If I then edit that command line to remove the -u "" & -pw "" components,
everything works as shown by the following:-
U:\Users\huw>S:\PROGRA~1\Sailwave\blat.exe
"C:\DOCUME~1\huw\LOCALS~1\Temp\blw27C
.htm" -to "valid user name here" -subject "2006 Poole Open data" -f "valid
user name here" -server "valid ISP server FQDN" -port "25" -attacht
"C:\DOCUME~1\huw\LOCALS~1\Temp\blw278.htm"
Blat v2.5.0 w/GSS encryption (build : Sep 14 2005 22:46:29)

Sending C:\DOCUME~1\huw\LOCALS~1\Temp\blw27C.htm to valid user name here

···

Subject: 2006 Poole Open data
Login name is valid user name here
Attached text file: C:\DOCUME~1\huw\LOCALS~1\Temp\blw278.htm

So my conclusion is that, if it is possible, to check for empty fields,
especially user name & password, in the Global Options SMTP tab when
creating the command string and leave out the -p & -u options completely if
those fields are blank/NULL.

Hope this is helpful.
Kind regards,
Huw

Kind regards,
Huw

Huw, before I do that, download build 11 again (I just updated it) and when
blat fails it will show you the command line used to invoke it. Paste this
into a DOS window to execute it by hand and you should see a decent error
message. I have yet to find a way to get these erros into Sailwave...

Kind regards,
Huw

Huw & Will, this should allow you to send over SMTP without user/pass.

Note to anybody else wishing to use the new "send email now"

I tried it with build 13 and it worked perfectly! Thank you!

I’m quite impressed with v194. While we don’t
have a specific need to move up from v157, I think the changes in 194 make the
interface simpler instead of more
complex as I had feared. There seems to be fewer places where things can be
specified in multiple places – like race distances – and that will
make accurate scoring much more likely and, hopefully, will make combining all
our series to determine the season champions much easier. I plan to lobby our
scorekeepers to move on from 157 as soon as possible.

I do have a couple of other things that I noticed in
exploring this version and testing the email part: even though I don’t
plan to use the send later option, I tested it and it doesn’t seem to
work. All the appropriate messages seemed to be issued including a final one
that said that the email was placed in my outbox and could be edited before
sending, but there was nothing in the outbox and nothing appeared to have been
sent. If you have ideas on what to check for, I’ll be happy to send more
info.

When I publish, the check box for include or don’t
include DNC results seems to have no effect on the series summary tables. The
published results include all boats in the data file including those who never
raced and those who are excluded. I did notice that the column that used to
contain a check mark for those included and an x for those excluded now
contains either a blank or a paragraph mark (¶). Similarly, I couldn’t
find a way to leave excluded boats out of the sign on/signoff sheet. We have
many boats in the database that are only included in invitational regattas and
there is no need to have them in these lists/tables.

Thanks again! You’re doing a terrific job!

Will

I agree. In 1.57 you *have* to define a Fleet record for each fleet, in
1.94 you don't - you can score by any field at any time and modify the
scoring only as necessary with the scoring rules.

However as previously mentioned I do plan to hide some of the stuff not used
often like multiple scoring systems, flights and App LE Add C and Submission
025 stuff etc; this should make it less comlex for first time users.

I'll look into your other comments ASAP.

Colin,

Not sure if this has come up on the list before. We recently scored the second race in a long series. The 1st race was scored by a colleague with version 1.88, the second was scored by me using 1.93. The series has 3 fleets, the default handicap is PY, but one fleet overrides with IRC. In the rush to get the results completed on the night I didn’t notice that the IRC fleet info did not get carried through to a scoring rule and the IRC fleet ended up being scored as if it was PY, but with the IRC handicaps - not good. Ok, we got some strange corrected time results, but I did a check on the other two fleet results which looked ok, but this one slipped through the net.

I’m not aware of seeing a warning come up anywhere during the conversion, but it may be useful, as a precaution, if there was a warning somewhere. Maybe there could be a range of acceptable values for a rating system stored somewhere to force a warning if things don’t look right.

Andy.
