PY Returns (UK)

Are there any UK clubs out there that allow a boat's configuration to change
during a series. i.e. allow a boat to use a spinny or not and rate them
differently per race. I ask because it'll stop automatic PY returns being
generated...

Colin,

I can understand how boat configuration changes from race to race could
affect calculation of PN returns for the RYA. However the RYA PY booklet
does encourage clubs to allow boats to do so. So a suggestion, which not
being a programmer might be easy or difficult to implement;-) The
information about a boat of a class in race includes the published PN and
the value entered for that race, or until another change; so it would be
possible to calculate the elapsed time the boat would have taken using the
published PN and then use that value and the published PN for the RYA PN
return overall calculations.

Look forward to your thoughts.

Kind regards & keep up the excellent progression in SailWave functionality
whilst providing, I think, the most user friendly package I have used.

Hi Huw,

I can understand how boat configuration changes from race to race could

affect calculation of PN returns for the RYA. However the RYA PY booklet
does encourage clubs to allow boats to do so.<

At our club, when you enter a series, you must state the configuration and
stick to it for that series. I think this is good. It stops folk using a
spinny in light winds and not using it in heavy winds and gaining the rating
advantages. As far as I can tell form the RYA this is what they advocate
too - in YR2...

I know that the RYA spec which is forthcoming in the next week or so will
not handle competitors changing their configuration part way though a
series - from what I can gather, the RYA think that a boat sails with and
without a spinny should be classed as *two* entries in the series. Can you
point me at the booklet words...

So a suggestion, which not

being a programmer might be easy or difficult to implement;-) The
information about a boat of a class in race includes the published PN and
the value entered for that race, or until another change; so it would be
possible to calculate the elapsed time the boat would have taken using the
published PN and then use that value and the published PN for the RYA PN
return overall calculations.<

I would be possible to do something like this but after communication with
the RYA, I don't think they would accept it...

Really looking forward to the FastCat race...

Regards,
Colin

Colin,

I have today read, again, the RYA Portsmouth Yardstick scheme and it does
say that for a series a boat shall sail in a particular configuration for
the whole of that series and that the rating for that configuration will be
used. Whilst my earlier comments are a possible solution, within the scheme
of things they are inappropriate. So two things
- I apologise for my inaccurate understanding of the RYA PY Scheme
- I have no problem with what you have proposed

Kind regards,
Huw
