I want to add some database capabilities to the Sailwave web site. The site
has a Unix host with a MySQL database facility, but can handle ASP/ADO etc
as well as PHP.
Which is the best tool to use ASP or PHP - what are the differences etc etc.

I know you seem to be more familiar with Microsoft technologies; however I
would suggest going with PHP not ASP as if you have to move ISP in the
future it is more likely that you will have PHP & MySQL available than ASP.
Just my 'two cents' worth.

I suggest to use PHP. PHP and MySQL are unbeatable as a team. Another
point is the great community around LAMP.

I develop webapplications with PHP for 3 years and so I can help you if
you have problems. If you are intrested I will send you a framework for
creating dynamic websites with PHP and MySQL.
I've not had any call to get into database integration, but I'm quite a fan
of PHP, and use it quite extensively on the Cherub site.I prefer it to ASP
because I find it gives me much better control of the resulting web output,
which means I can write much leaner and faster pages than most people using
ASP seem to end up with.
