Qualification

Could somebody remind me of the Qualification requirements.

i.e. does it mean *after* the series is scored normally certain boats are
then marked as non-qualifiers, or, does it involve a computation during
scoring.

**Dear

Colin,**

To refresh you memory about participation (qualification) requirements
look at message 191 on the Yahoo Sailwave group. Below
I’ve include a copy of our YC’s prize
qualification (participation) requirements, some general comments from Gregg
Bemis and a suggestion of how to add the participation requirement feature to Sailwave. Qualification requirements can be checked after
series scoring.

1.Beverly YC series participation requirements

At the Beverly YC we have the following
requirement for our monthly series

“The number of races in which a boat must compete to qualify for
a series prize is shown in the table below. A boat will not be considered to
have competed in a race if it receives a DNC or DNS score, otherwise it will be
considered to have competed.

*** Number
of races in series***

*** Number
of races needed to qualify for series***

  • 2/3 of number of races sailed
    rounded up to nearest integer*

2. Some General Thoughts about Participation
Requirements

“Required races are of two
kinds, - the number of races required to qualify in a series and particular
races required. No mention of required
races in the sailing instructions indicates a set series.”

“In a long series some minimum number of races to qualify must be
decided upon and announced. The number
can be stated specifically or as a percentage of all the scheduled races. Something around two-thirds or three-quarters
of the total number of races seems to work out well in practice for a summer
series. This allows everyone an
opportunity to do something else besides race and at the same time ensures
enough races to provide a representative average. Some clubs require all but one race; others,
only a majority of the races in the series.
The former is pretty restrictive.
In the latter it could happen that the two leading boats only meet in
one race. Something in between these
extremes is generally preferred.”

This is a wonderful book.

I think it is still available from USSailing

Qualification (participation)
requirements and discards are two separate facets of scoring. For example, in a
6 race series it might be reasonable to require boats to participate in 5
races to be eligible for a prize but allow 2 discards. Checking of
participation requirements can be taken into account after the desired method
of series scoring is completed

** 3. A
Way** to add
Participation Requirements to Sailwave

What would be
helpful is to add a race qualification profile like the discard profile to the
series profile and then after finishing series scoring in the usual way, check
to see if boats have met the participation (qualification) requirement. Change the
series rank of boats that have not met the requirement to DNQ (Did Not Qualify)
Then resort the order finish for the series and provide new series rankings.
The output of the series scoring should show all the boats that participated in
the series even if they sailed in only one race and did not qualify. Competitors
like to see how they might have done if they had qualified.

Regards

George Gardner
