Race Committee

I am new to racing. Our club is small and we take
turns on Race Committe.

I am trying to set up sailwave to credit a sailor with
points for RC duty that does not add or subtract too
much from his series racing scores.

If you just average: A racer that might win the first
2 or 3 races only has to do RC the rest of the races
to win the series.

Other formulas can penalize a good racer for doing RC.

Can anyone suggest how to handle this?

Thanks,

Sam

Sam,

At our club we work on the principle of trying to give the RO the result he would have had if he’d sailed. So we average a set number of previous races to come up with his ROD score (we use 3 but I fell it should be more dependent on the length of the series). We exclude DNC from the averaging on the basis that if he hadn’t turned up to race but has turned up for his duty the points ought to reflect that having showed up we shouldn’t give him points that include a no-show. However we do include other points categories such as RTD, DNF, DSQ etc in the averaging. So for example, the following results

1, DNC, 2, DNC, 3, ROD

would give an average of 2 ((3+2+1)/3) for the ROD. But where retirement attracts say 61 points (60 competitors),

1, RTD, 2, DNC, 3, ROD

would give (3+2+61)/3, i.e.22 points

If you haven’t done three previous races to your ROD, then it is calculated over the first three qualifying (i.e. non-DNC) races. That means you ROD points change until you’ve completed the three races.

The purpose of keeping the number of races to average over relatively low is first, to approximate to current performance, i.e. an improver throughout the season doesn’t want his points for an end of season ROD to be averaged over the whole season as it doesn’t indicate how he would have done if he had sailed. Second, as you come to the end of a series you don’t want too many undecided races, as the competitors don’t know who they have to beat. As ROD duties are allocated then it is unlikely that anyone would do more than one per season, and any attempt to flagrantly breach that would be obvious and challenged.

It is open to manipulation. If you’ve strung together three good results and it’s still some time to your ROD, you could offer to swap. If it’s only a couple of races away you might decide to not show up for the intervening races to get another good result. However at club level I can’t believe that it would be a real problem.

This is obviously only one club’s way, and I’d be happy to hear of other views.

Best regards - John.

Virgina:

This year, for the first time, we will be trying to reward the volunteer
race committee who are drawn from active racers. We are going to try
awarding Redress Points and specifically the RDGa option in Sailwave, where
the race in question is assigned average points. The debate we still have
here is whether it should be the average of all races (except the one in
question) or all except drops. We run a 9 race series with a max of 2
drops.

John Rischmiller, in his reply to you brings out the difficulty of this
system in that the series winner may not be known until after Sailwave
computes the results. Then again it should make waiting for the results
more exciting before the Prize Giving.

I loke forward to how others have addressed this question.

Virginia,
Lake Champlain Yacht Club allows the RC an average of all its races in the
series (not just preceding), but then we only allow one turn per racer at
RC.

Hi Virginia,

We take a simplistic approach and award the duty officer 1.5 points. It
works very well because sailors don't grudge doing the duty so much... In
theory the SIs limit it to 3 duties per series but if somebody is happy to
more we let them because most of us would rather sail. Nobody seems worried
that a series could be won by N duty points... Perhaps it's because we tend
to view club racing as practice for open/national events etc...
