Race numbering in a series when some classes don't sail one or more races

My apologies if this is asked and answered, I found now way to scope my search to topics in this forum only.

We have a simple one design regatta with multiple classes sailing multiple races. In race 5 only one class participated so the other class starts were removed from that race giving results as below (representing just classes 2 and 3 by way of example):

You see that for Class 2 race 5 is skipped, which makes some sense. However in the regatta there is no overall, all classes compete solely within their class so it would make more sense to number class 2’s races from one to eight. I see no way to do that in SailWave v.2.9.7 but I thought I would ask here in case I am missing something.

To clarify (I think) -

For a series with multiple classes, you want to delete the results for
one class from one race (which you've already done in your case) and
then move the remaining completed races forward. For example, Classes A
& B have races 1, 2, 3 and 4. The results for race #2 for Class C were
deleted so it now has races 1, 3 and 4 (no race #2). You want to move
the results for just Class C so they are 1, 2 and 3 rather than 1, 3 and 4.

This is exactly what happens when a race is abandoned after completion,
possibly as the result of redress and a protest committee decision. So,
it may not be common but it certainly isn't rare.

This makes sense as then the races would be numbered in numerical order
in the order of completion. If a race is abandoned and then resailed you
wouldn't want to put the results for the new race in the abandoned one
because then the tie-breaking rules wouldn't work correctly (I believe
Jon confirmed a while ago that tie-breaking works based on race number,
not something else, with higher-numbered races being considered as
later-run races) I believe the 2017-20 rulebook is expected to contain a
provision turning this current good "policy" into a rule.

HOW TO --

I'm no expert on merging and importing but it should be possible to get
what you want doing that. I did it as follows (the class/fleet for which
the race is being moved is the MOVER class/fleet).

1. Make a copy of your BLW file and work with that in case anything goes
wrong.

2. Clear the results for the boats in the MOVER class/fleet for the race
to be deleted (this is done by hand on the cell with the results for
that race for that boat - click "clear result"). This should change the
viewed results to display "finishes" (either finish time or finish
position depending on how your finishes were entered and the race starts
were set up).

3. Export the results using File|Export series summary to Windows
clipboard - you will get all the boats in all the classes but you have
no choice (we'll edit later). For export, just the sail number and the
race columns are necessary but you can export the class/fleet to make
things a little easier later (scroll down to make sure nothing else is
selected since the default is to select a bunch of stuff you don't
want). Make sure the checkbox to include a header row is checked (that
should be the default). You'll need to make sure the finishes (finish
times or finish positions) are showing before you export (what gets
exported is what is showing on the screen, which after scoring is
normally just the points and you definitely don't want that).

4. You now have the results on the Windows clipboard so you need to make
a CSV file. Open Notepad and paste into a blank document. Save that
document as a CSV file (in other words, with the ".csv" extension).

5. Open the CSV file you just created in a spreadsheet (Excel is
probably the default but OpenOffice should work as well). The first
column will be sail numbers. If you exported the class/fleet that should
be the 2nd column. Other columns will be finishes (finish times or
finish positions depending on your setup) with the header as the race
title for that race (R1, R2, etc. as the default).

  a. First, delete any boats except those in the MOVER class (this means
deleting entire rows). If you exported the class/fleet that should be
easy. Or, it would be the boats with no results for one of the races
(since you cleared results before exporting).

  b. If you exported the class/fleet then delete that column (it isn't
necessary so you can delete it; if you decide to keep it you probably
should make sure it is set to IGNORE when importing; I suggest deleting
to avoid mistakes later).

  c. Delete the columns for any races that aren't being deleted or moved.

  d. Select the cells that are blank (not a column, just the cells),
representing the blank results for the race to be deleted. Right-click
and select delete; you should get an option and you want to "shift cells
left" when asked. Now, you should have a last column with a header cell
with a race title but no results. Delete that column. Now, you should
have a first column with sail numbers and the remaining columns will all
be finishes with the NEW race titles as headers.

  e. For each column with race finishes you need to have a corresponding
column with the race number in it (not the title of the race, just a
number such as 1, 2 3, etc.). I suggest putting it just in front of the
column with the finishes for that race. The header can be whatever you
want so long as you can remember what it means when it comes time to
import but I suggest using the NEW race number (not the race TITLE as
that would be confusing when importing).

When you exported the finishes the header for each column was the race
title, such as R1, R2, etc. So having just the race number as the header
for the new columns should be clear and not confusing.

  f. Save this file as a CSV file with a new name. The first column
should be sail numbers. The other columns are for race numbers and
finishes one each for each race to be imported. The header for each race
number column should be the race number and the header for each race
finish column should be the race title (R1, R2, etc.).

6. Go back to your SW file. Edit the race starts for the MOVER
class/fleet, moving the start data for each moved race to the next
lower-numbered race. This needs to be done manually so WATCH FOR
MISTAKES. If the MOVER class/fleet winds up with fewer races than the
other classes/fleets then you'll just delete it as a start from the last
race (instead of editing it).

7. Now you need to delete the finishes for the race finishes you are
about to import. For each boat in the MOVER class/fleet, clear the
result for the races for which finishes are to be imported (remember you
are going to import finishes for just the races to be moved).

8. Under File|Import results from CSV file... find your the CSV file you
edited and saved. Click next to get to the map/assign screen. You need
to import separately for each race. So, for the first race to import -
map the sailnumber to "SailNo"; map the race number column to "RaceNo";
map the finishes column to "Finish"; and set the other columns to
IGNORE. You can only import one race at a time so other race finishes
should be set to IGNORE. Click on NEXT and then FINISH on the next
screen to import. Repeat for remaining race finishes to be imported.

9. You are done importing and need to hit "Rescore" to make sure
everything is current.

Obviously, this isn't simple but is probably worthwhile doing when you
have the time (such as on the penultimate day of a multiple day regatta
or series).

Art

PS - I use 2.9.7 so I'm sure this procedure will work for pretty much
all versions of SW.

I see Art has kindly given his thoughts on this.

My thoughts are there is not a single answer to this as it depends on the situation. Do you want to show that a specific class did not take part in a race? Was the race abandoned (for all or just 1 class) so do you want the next race to be the next number so it is clear that say R5 was abandoned?

By extracting each class to a separate file you have complete control but I prefer them all in the same file. My normal strategy is to add identifies to the race name. You can edit the Race Name by right clicking the Race number. So as an example if R5 is the first Sunday race I name it R5 Sun and if there are some classes that do a different number in the morning of an event I would add PM to the first afternoon race. Then if say some classes had 3 races on the first day and some had 4 - I would start the second day as R5 Sun, then it is clear to all.

The actual race number for the particular fleet is easy to determine by counting the columns.

Sailwave is intelligent enough to handle missing races on a fleet basis and will not count a race if there are no results for a competitor in that fleet. So generally it works very well
