I look after the website for Dovestone Sailing Club. When I receive the results from the race officer the race is empty. How can I sort out this problem. The race officer assures me that the results look OK on his laptop.
Hi,
The reason is someone or something has processed the sailwave (blw) file and removed all the LF characters from the end of the lines
I have added them back and attached the amended file

Nik,
Although Jon has diagnosed the problem and provided a fix this time,
it would be very helpful to understand the environment in which this
problem occurred.
So a description of the race officer PC in terms of operating system
and Sailwave version together with how the file was transferred from
him to you, please.
Also a description of your computer in terms of its operating system
and Sailwave version and how you received the file plus what you did
once it arrived with by the transfer mechanism.
Thanks in anticipation of more information.
Kind regards,
Huw

Yes Sailwave handles CRLF and LF line endings but CR alone is new to me…

Macintosh used to use CR alone. Someone once justified it because the carriage return lever on a typewriter usually has an auto line feed gizmo, so typists know that a carriage return is enough to start a new line therefore CR is more intuitive than LF. Now Mac uses LF. Clearly the justification didn’t hold water.

Hi Jon
Race officer (Mick) is not at all computer literate! I believe he used Outlook, the attachment was received on my iMac. So I suspected the Mac of stripping the LF. But I did exactly the same thing with the file you supplied as that from Mick and the one you sent worked and Mick’s didn’t so I think the stripping had happened before I saved it to our local network. I used a text editor to add CRLF to all the files that Mick had sent and it fixed them all. But I have also suggest to Mick that he zips them up before attaching them to an email. I’ll let you know if I discover anything more concrete to get to the root of the problem.
