Race Time Clocks

For a long time we have used a home made timer with an LED readout
and a button attached to a long wire. You could read the LED from
about 10 feet from the timer. When you pushed and held the button
the readout froze but the clock kept running, allowing you to read
and record a finishing time. When you released the button the clock
jumped back to the current elapsed time and kept going.

Unfortunately, it is now broken and unrepairable.

Does anyone know of a good replacement that is self (battery)
powered, has a digital readout that can be seen for about 10 feet
and either counts down for five minutes and then counts up for at
least four hours, or just counts up? Remotle control is a big plus.

Thanks for your help!

Hello,

I am not able to determine from your posting what part of the world you are
from. However the following may be of interest.

A member of my Club, Datchet Water SC, has written a program, called PROlog,
written in Microsoft Visual Basic for PC that will start races according to
the standard ISAF 5-4-1-Go system as default. The program can cause sound
signals to be made via relays connected to the serial port and it can sense
when an external button is pressed, again using the serial port, to record a
time - be it a finish time or any other race event time that the race team
may want to record. The information can be printed out to a printer or
written to an electronic file for importation in to a program like Sailwave,
when we sort out the import format, to calculate race and series results.
The program also uses Microsoft Speech API's to give a verbal countdown via
PC built-in speakers or external speakers connected to the audio output
port. We use a Toshiba portable with 128Mb RAM running an Intel Celeron
800MHz CPU and would recommend this as a minimum specification.

The program has been demonstrated at two RYA Race Management Conferences
here in the UK during February where it generated quite a bit of interest.

Kind regards,
