Races Using Personal Handicaps

I am Sailing Sec. of Tudor Sailing Club and have been looking at
Sailwave with a view to using it for our race scoring. It seems to do
everything that we need with one possible exception:

We run a series in the Autumn that is based on average achieved
handicaps from previous races in the season. I can see how we could
score that series using a special ratings file but I cannot see a way
of calculating the average achieved handicaps from previously sailed
races.

Can anyoen help me here? Is there a way to do this using Sailwave,
without having to enter the whole lot into Excel as we do at present?

Many thanks,

Richard Gunn

I am reasearching sailwave for my own sailing club and would
appreciate any information you may have on the use or incorperating
excel into the sailwave scoring system.

I am fairly adept at using excel but a complete novice with sailwave,
so any information would be much appreciated.

I look forward to your reply,

Regards

Keith Strudwick.

Richard,

At Redesmere SC we traditionally work out personal handicaps from
the average position scored in three handicap series each of 20 or
so races in each series. We take this average and subtract it from
14. The resulting number is the handicap for an average 60 minute
duration handicap race. This is added to the corrected time (e.g.
Finish time of 55 mins, corrected time from PY = 52 mins, handicap =
8 mins, personal handicap corrected time = 60 mins). Novices with
no race history are given an initial handicap of 2 mins, juniors
start at zero. All the above is adjusted manually based on the
judgement of the Sailing Sec (me!).

This is all done using Excel - very time consuming.

I have experimented using the "rating needed to win" in Sailwave and
averaging the RWin over a series. Rather spookily the figures I get
tally very closely with the handicaps calculated the long way. I'll
do some more work on this but I think we will be using this method
for 2004.

Any thoughts?

Nick Cheetham.

Hi Nick,

Using the 'Rating needed to win' sounds promising; I will try it with some
old results and see how it works out. The way we currently do achieved
handicaps using Excel is certainly a pain; especially if we change to
Sailwave and have to enter the results again in to Excel just to do personal
handicaps.

I will let you know how I get on.

Richard Gunn

Keith,

I do no think that there is currently a way of linking Sailwave and Excel;
it seems to be in the wish list of things to add.

We do not currently use Sailwave but it will make it easier to post results
on our website. My testing has found that we can do everything we need to do
using Sailwave, with the possible exception of achieved handicaps.

Keith
I used spreadsheets (MS Works and MS Excel - with SailScore) for years:
making the switch to SailWave was like turning a light on! Just do it -
it's a great programme. If you really want to do something 'heavy' you can
always export the data to Excel.
Good luck.

Ok, I have tried putting in some old results and getting out the 'rating
needed to win'. Although the actual handicap numbers are different from our
current system (which calculates average achieved and then achieved
handicaps for each entry), the RATIOS of handicap numbers are identical for
the 2 methods.

So I am concluding that using 'rating needed to win' is an acceptable method
of using Sailwave to calculate personal handicaps. We will have to take the
'rating needed to win' figures and put them into Excel to get an average for
each entrant but that should be Ok.

Hope this is helpful.

Currently there is nothing hardwired into Sailwave to facilitate this other
then the calculation of the achieved handicap itself (Rwin), which can then
be set (by hand) as a race-specific rating value for a subsequent race(s).
Personal handicaps are something that are in the pipeline.

It occurs to me though that it's would be a fairly quick tweak to do
something based on achieved handicaps values. I'll have a think about it.

Hi Colin,

Thanks for that, I had sussed out the Rwin bit but we need to average out
over quite a few races from various series. My current results man is
reluctant to change from his tried and trusted Excel until this is done, so
we are stuck with dull looking results for now. I will, however, be using
Sailwave for our Regatta in July, as it will save me lots of calculations
and writing out results sheets by hand, if I take a laptop and printer.

I agree with you there! The regatta is quite straight forward; three races
with about 4 classes and then 2 separate races with cruisers. Sailwave will
help in getting the results printed out fast, which means I can spend less
time in the Racebox and more in the bar!
