For a rc sailboat race with 52 competitors we would like te do the following:
5 qualifying races, with each race has 3 heats or flights I think Sailwave calls them and then 4 or 5 bronze, sliver and gold finals.
Is it possible to have random flights in the qualifying series? And if yes, how to do that. We would like to have as mixed fleets as possible in the qualifying series.
We are quite new to SW, so any help is wellcome.
Is there any reason not to use the Heat Management System that is
standard practice for RC events? As I understand it (I have always
been an umpire not a scorer at RC events) first race is a mixed
fleet based, where possible, on rankings, then subsequent races are
run using a ladder system.

Hello Gordon.
we do not want to use the HMS system for the following reasons:
-
capability of the RC
-
limited possible fleet size: with HMS you always have extra 3 or 4 sailiors in the heat
-
a mixed fleet ‘stretches’ itself along the racecourse while more equal fleets can make a mess at the marks.
-
atmosphere: this is Micro Magic sailing event. The social aspect is almost just as important as the racing. We like this idea of not knowing who will be in your next race.
In short: yes: we considered HMS, but rejected it and chose for this random fleet/flight idea
See in attachment the provisory entrants list, with a first try to randomise the entrants in Excel.
