Rating files

Our Club, the Lake Monroe Sailing Association (in Florida) uses Sailwave for all our scoring and are quite pleased with it.

I have things that I want to accomplish and they appear to be doable with sailwave but thus far I have not been very successful.

  1. We use the USPN handicap system, and want to apply the wind ratings. I have been working on it but so far I am stumped.

  2. Just looked at the rating files subject and have created a rating file for all Portsmouth rated boats as of August 2013 that I would like to submit.

The format as I understand it would be like this

USPN,Buccaneer 240
(W/E),104.3,",105,101.8,100,"

I can’t find the page that I saw that showed me who to send it to.

  1. My goal is to have an ongoing series that can utilize wind ratings or personal handicaps (as established by our club).

I am feeling really dense so far.

Ideally a competitor line would look like this.

Boatname Class Sail Helm Rating Race1 Race2 etc

MyBoat PRS23 176 Joe Sailor 96,99.5,95.5,93,92.5,103 1:03:42 1:21:25

All just imaginary data shown here.

Then scoring would require selecting a particular handicap for a specific race, such as A,B,C,D,E,F.

From the reading I have done it seems that this is possible with Sailwave as it is, BUT I am not able to get close to doing so far.

More Help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the info you have provided so far, Sailwave is a really good system.

Willie,

It sounds like your ratings file is in the correct format based on this
page:

http://www.sailwave.com/how-do-i-create-and-use-rating-files

You don't need to send the file to anyone. You can use it yourself. You
might be confused with the discussion of where to send RESULTS (not
ratings) for the RYA version of Portsmouth. If you check on the US
Sailing website you'll find information on US Portsmouth and I believe
they have who to send results to in the US.

When doing race results, the rating displayed is the rating used for
scoring that race. When doing series results I think it just displays
the first of multiple ratings, not all of them. My club does race and
series results on different pages. For races we show the ratings. For
series results we don't as it can be different for different races plus
we find it just makes it harder to read the results.

Sailwave allows you to put both race and series results on a single page
but you cannot separately configure them. Ratings will show for both or
for neither. If you want different configurations for race and series
results you need to have separate pages for each.

There are others who are more familiar with rating files. When we use
wind=indexed ratings we manually assign the ratings to each competitor
and don't use a ratings file so I cannot be much help on that. I do know
there is one trick to using wind-indexed ratings - you need to enable
them under SETUP|USER INTERFACE.

PS - For personal handicaps I assume you'd simply have to assign a
"class" for each boat-skipper combination, for example "Laser, John
Smith" and "Laser, Jane Doe."

Willie,

In addition to my earlier comments - here is a file with wind-indexed
ratings (no ratings file).

To do a similar file:

1. You have to enable wind-indexing under Setup|User Interface
2. Under Setup|Scoring System|Rating System you need to pick your rating
system (presumably you'd choose USSA Portsmouth).
3. Same place, you need to choose "Use wind indexed rating values" and
assign names for your ranges (with commas between the names).
4. For each competitor you need to assign ratings for each range in the
same order as you established under rating systems above (with commas
between ratings).
5. For each race you need to pick the range to use on the dropdown menu
under Edit|Edit race|pick the race to be edited.

There is a description of wind-indexing for Sailwave here:
http://www.sailwave.com/how-do-i-use-wind-indexed-ratings

Once you've played around a bit you'll find it is pretty easy.

I suggest figuring out the wind-indexing with ratings put in manually
before you try rating files. I've never used rating files but there
tends to be a fair amount of discussion on getting them to work so I'd
be sure you have wind-indexing working first before you tackle rating files.

The file I've attached has a one-design class and a handicap class that
uses standard Time on Time TCFs (Time Correction Factors) for Light,
Medium and Heavy winds. The handicap class is WC70. All the ratings are
manually entered for each competitor.

Happy to follow-up if needed.
