Rating needed to win column blank

Hi Kerry,

I have fixed the problem (with the calculation of BCE and BCR in the context
of RDG (etc) without an associated elapsed time) and will posting a new
version of Sailwave to the user group in a few dats; thanks for the
feedback, it was very useful.

Hi Wayne,

BCR - Back Calculated Randicap (what Sailwave used to call Rwin). The
rating you needed to tie with the winner.
BCE - Back Calculated Elapsed time difference (what Sailwave used to
call -Ewin). The elapsed time you needed to sail faster to tie with the
winner.
RDG - Standard RRS Appendix A code for redress.

From hitting F2 when publishing results:-

···

-------------------------------------------------------------
CHECK Include BCR
Include a column showing the rating each boat
needed to tie with the winner. This is called the
back calculated rating (BCR).
-------------------------------------------------------------
CHECK Include BCE
Include a column showing how much faster each
boat needed to sail on elapsed time to tie with the
winner. If used, the rating system is taken into
account when making this calculation. This is
called the back calculated elapsed (BCE) time.
-------------------------------------------------------------

Hit F2 in any window (except the main frame/series windows) to see the
tooltips for that window in a textual form.

Hi Wayne,

BCE - Back Calculated Elapsed time to win, i.e. the amount of on the course
time that would have had to be shaved off to come equal first
BCR - Back Calculated Rating that would be need to come equal first, the
difference between this value and the rating used to calculate the results
is an indication of how the crew are sailing
RDG - is a scoring code for Redress Given, i.e. a protest committee has
considered a protest or request for redress and decided that boats or boats
have had their finishing position affected by the incident being considered.

Hope this helps,
Kind regards,
Huw

Hi Wayne,

It's probably worth mentioning that an equivalent interpretation of BCR is
the rating that you sailed to, assuming the winner sailed to their rating.

For exmaple in the example race 3 below, assuming I sailed to my rating
(dubious), Chris had an effective rating of 121.5, or put another way, if
his rating had been 121.5 in that race he would have tied for first place.

He needed to sail 53 seconds faster to tie for first place. As Huw stated,
BCE is useful because it's a direct indication of how much faster you needed
to sail *over the water* - the differences in handicap are taken into
account in the calculation.

http://results.sailwave.com/r3.htm

Totally random example of course.

Just a note. The Chesapeake Bay region (CBYRA) uses their locally produced program Java score.
Currently java score does not compute either BCR or BCE. Since almost all of the Bay is racing PHRF or one design... my repeated requests to have java score compute these stats for the few Portsmouth races that the clubs score for us (beach cats) have not bubbled up on the priortiy list.

It makes sense to report out seconds per mile behind or total time behind in a time on distance race but the numbers are meaningless for a time on time race.

With the push for IRC on the east coast as a replacement for PHRF for the top big boats I hope they will now have a reason to update their code.... Upgrading their software solution is probably is too much to hope for.

Nevertheless... I would like to configure sailwave to generate a table like java score. The sailors here are used to seeing time allowance, time behind and/or time behind as seconds per mile behind.
EG. Solomons Island Race July 2005.

Division: PHRF A0 (7 boats) (top) Distance 55 miles
Pos Sail Boat Skipper Rating Finish Time Time Allowance Corrected Time Time Behind Penalty Pts
1 USA 2 STRAY DOG ENGH, CHARLES 9 1/06:34:31 0/00:08:15 0/11:36:16 0/00:00:00 1.0
2 50282 ALTAIR JOHNSON, TOM 3 1/06:51:20 0/00:02:45 0/11:58:35 0/00:22:19 2.0

Where Time allowance is the distance times rating and Time Behind is actual sailing time you would have needed to save to win (I think)

Any thoughts on how to do this.
(I haven't played much with sailwave and PHRF ratings.

Thanks
Mark

Hi Mark,

In Sailwave all the rating systems are treated the same, there is no special
logic. If you enter a race distance you get an average speed whichever
rating system you use. I could extend it to optionally compute
seconds/unit-distance behind as well I think...
