Ratings Embedded into BLW file.....

Can we embedded the rating values into the regatta series file insted
of creating a .csv file and copying it into the ratings directory ???

Thank you,
Sudhakar

Hi Sudhakar,

Yes, if you look at the a .blw that contains ratings (from
installdir/examples for e.g.) you'll see the the required syntax. Is that
what you mean?

Are you creating .blw files directly from RM or CSV files...?

Hi Colin,

RM will export the competitors into a CSV. The firstline will have
the sailwave column names as specified in the sailwave document.
I am trying to work on the possibilities of exporting the data
directly into a .blw file. To do this I am trying to understand how
exactly the sailwave application works. Is there a document that I
can refer to configure a sample Regatta with competitors from
multiple classes (PHRF, IRC, Onedesign, etc...) enter start and
finish times then score the classes independently for each race and
then for the entire regatta.

Do we have to specify a scoring system for each class (PHRF, IRC,
Onedesign, etc...)?

Thank you,
Sudhakar

OK, but you can include the rating as a CSV column as well.

To do this I am trying to understand how
exactly the sailwave application works. Is there a document that I
can refer to configure a sample Regatta with competitors from
multiple classes (PHRF, IRC, Onedesign, etc...) enter start and

Not really. Some pointers though. Firstly read the Sailwave philosophy
section in the help file (you'll need the latest version from the web for
this) - that gives you the approach. Competitors are not formally 'put
into' divisioins etc; rather each competitors has a wide range of available
fields that you can populate giving them common properties; for example a
group of competitors may all have fleet=PHRF. Then when scoring you can
'score by field' in this case fleet and Sialwave will score each unique
fleet separately. This flat-database approach gives huge flexibility when
scoring. For example after doing the formal results you can for fun score
by club, class age-groups, regiion etc etc to get results that competitors
really like to see and have a bit of banter about at the bar - "our club is
beating yours" etc...

When scoring Sailwave always does the whole series; i..e is scors every
sailed race every time. You do not have to score races individually; just
hit the score button.

It's a little different to other software but when you get used to it, it's
*very* simple and easy to use.

Do we have to specify a scoring system for each class (PHRF, IRC,
Onedesign, etc...)?

Only if you want to score them differently. When you apply a scoring system
and score by fleet (say) the main scoring system will be applied to each
fleet unless you specify scoring rules to be applied on a fleet specific
bases. For example the rating system in the main scoring system that you
apply may be USAPN, but when scoring by fleet you may want the PHRF fleet to
use the PHTFToD rating system, so you create a scoring rule that is applpied
when Fleet=PHRF, inheriting everything except the scoring system. Again
this provides great flexibility in that you can score the series in may
different way and using different rating systems, which again is of interest
to competitors. I am trying to get clubs to not just provide 'the' results
but interesting altermnatives as well.

Sailwave is a haooby and at the present I get very little time to work on
it - I am working on getting more hellp into the system but until then treat
this group of a kind of interactive manual.

Apologies for probable typos, have to go to real work...

Hi Colin,

Thank you for your detailed email. After going through your email and
Sailwave philosophy now the things are clear to me. I have configured
one of our races in Sailwave and generated the results. They exactly
match the results we already have. I am really impressed by the
flexibility Sailwave provides for scoring the races.

Thank You
