Ratings files

Back again after a bit of a scoring break. I downloaded the latest version. The ratings file scheme seems broken.

Back in the day... my ratings file was a sub directory in the Sailwave folder under programs.... the new install deletes that and adds a new executable program to the sailwave directory???

Well the new program is not working properly.

I have a USPN portsmouth.csv ratings file and a 2013 SCHRS.csv ratings file in the rating directory set up under the global settings..

I start a new event and select a scoring system and a ratings file and check the auto update button for portsmouth classes.
The pull down menu has my portsmouth classes and the proper ratings.
good..

Not so good.
When I set up another scoring system with ISAF SCHRS selected... I only get the USPN names in my drop down list. rescore does not update teh drop down list. Selecting the boat puts in a uspn rating and not an schrs rating.
If I have guessed at the right class name for a boat in the schrs table. rescorew will pull in the proper rating. the spread sheet indicates SCHRS column.

When I use my out of date SINGLE ratings csv file from 2010 I only get the PN list of boat classes.. irrespective of the rating system that I choose. However, I have harmonized the class names between schrs and uspn in the csv file. with this csv file. I can switch between USPN and SCHRS alternate scoring systems

So... How do i get it to use the SCHRS ratings table when I select it.
My event is coming up in one week.... rrrrgh.

Have you changed the tag for SCHRS.. I downloade Hu Pearces SCHRS file and my pull down list is blank. (restarted sailwave etc)

Hi Mark,

Welcome back.

You don't say what your previous version was. There have been some changes to the file locations over the last couple of years. But don't panic it does all still work. The reason for this are new versions of Windows such as Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8. Where as in XP you could put files in subdirectories of the main program within Program files this is not directly possible in the new versions of Windows. It is a bit complicated because to try a create backward compatibility Microsoft writes files to virtual directories but these virtual directories change for each user. Additionally the ProgramData directory is a hidden directory by default in the later operating systems. So to meet these new requirements Sailwave now stores it files in what is the all users(Public) documents.
Assuming you are running windows 7 if you navigate to Libraries - Public Documents - Sailwave You will find some sub directories. One of these is Ratings - You need to put your ratings files in this directory and Sailwave will pick them up.

Hope this helps
Let us know if you need any help.

Congratulations and Thank you for stepping up for Colin!

What is the secret code for using the ISAF SCHRS files??
My USA Portsmouth file is fine.. and uses USPN as the code in the csv spreadsheet..

I downloaded Hu Pearce 's SCHRS file from the sailwave downloads and the code is ;SCHR which back in the day would have commented the entire line. This file does not work for me when placed in the public\documents\sailwave\ratings folder by itself. (Global settings point there as well)

I edited the file and used the web site's tag. SCHRS (which is the old ratings code) and that does not work as well.

Meaning, no boats in the pull down menu and if you give an entry a proper SCHRS boat class.... you cannot get the rating pulled in.

So.. Not sure where I am going wrong here. I am concluding that sailwave does not pick up the SCHRS rating system file even though it changes the spreadsheet to reflect the rating system selected.

I can use my old ratings file which uses a subset of the USPN ratings and harmonizes SCHRS and Texel class name formats for these ratings. (These ratings are subsets of texel and SCHRS ratings). I can pull in ratings for Texel or SCHRS boats in this way.... (All of the class names are USPN only.

So I am basically confused.

Thanks.

Hi Mark,

I’ve updated the SCHRS files on the Sailwave site. Could you give these a try now. Thanks

There was a problem with the ones originally from Huw which Wayne kindly pointed out - which when I told Huw, he sent me some amended ones but unfortunately the amended ones he sent were not comma separated. Then other events happened an I totally forgot I had not resolved the problem and neither had I told Huw there was still a problem - apologies. I have edited the SCHRS file now so hopefully this will work for you - I have also uploaded the SCHRS PN version from Wayne.

Let us know how it goes.

If any of you notice something has dropped of my radar don’t hesitate to give me a nudge - thanks

Hi Jon
Still no joy.
I find no boats in the pull down menu for the SCHRS file.
When I download the SCHRSPN file and use it with the PY scoring system. I only get one boat on the pull down. F1613.5main .... nothing else.

The only difference seems to be that this number in the csv file is right justified and all of the others are left justified. My excel is a bit rusty and so I have no idea why this is so.

It turns out that my old ratings file also has the rating number right justtified. Converting the format to text and then right justifying does not seem to save the format in my version of excell
So, I am still stuck. The details always kill you!!!

Hi Mark,

I’ve re-uploaded the files but this time rather than use what people have given me I’ve edited them myself and checked them individually.

They seem to be OK - but please let me know

Thanks Jon

Congratulations and Thank you for stepping up for Colin!

What is the secret code for using the ISAF SCHRS files??

My USA Portsmouth file is fine… and uses USPN as the code in the csv

spreadsheet…

I downloaded Hu Pearce 's SCHRS file from the sailwave downloads and the

code is ;SCHR which back in the day would have commented the entire line.

This file does not work for me when placed in the

public\documents\sailwave\ratings folder by itself. (Global settings point

there as well)

I edited the file and used the web site’s tag. SCHRS (which is the old

ratings code) and that does not work as well.

Meaning, no boats in the pull down menu and if you give an entry a proper

SCHRS boat class… you cannot get the rating pulled in.

So… Not sure where I am going wrong here. I am concluding that sailwave

does not pick up the SCHRS rating system file even though it changes the

spreadsheet to reflect the rating system selected.

I can use my old ratings file which uses a subset of the USPN ratings and

harmonizes SCHRS and Texel class name formats for these ratings. (These

ratings are subsets of texel and SCHRS ratings). I can pull in ratings for

Texel or SCHRS boats in this way… (All of the class names are USPN only.

So I am basically confused.

Thanks.

Hi Mark,

Welcome back.

You don’t say what your previous version was. There have been some

changes to the file locations over the last couple of years. But don’t

panic it does all still work. The reason for this are new versions of

Windows such as Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8. Where as in XP you could

put files in subdirectories of the main program within Program files this

is not directly possible in the new versions of Windows. It is a bit

complicated because to try a create backward compatibility Microsoft writes

files to virtual directories but these virtual directories change for each

user. Additionally the ProgramData directory is a hidden directory by

default in the later operating systems. So to meet these new requirements

Sailwave now stores it files in what is the all users(Public) documents.

Assuming you are running windows 7 if you navigate to Libraries - Public

Documents - Sailwave You will find some sub directories. One of these is

Ratings - You need to put your ratings files in this directory and Sailwave

will pick them up.

Hope this helps

Let us know if you need any help.

Back in the day… my ratings file was a sub directory in the

new executable program to the sailwave directory???

Well the new program is not working properly.

I have a USPN portsmouth.csv ratings file and a 2013 SCHRS.csv

ratings file in the rating directory set up under the global settings…

I start a new event and select a scoring system and a ratings file

and check the auto update button for portsmouth classes.

The pull down menu has my portsmouth classes and the proper ratings.

good…

Not so good.

When I set up another scoring system with ISAF SCHRS selected… I

only get the USPN names in my drop down list. rescore does not update teh

drop down list. Selecting the boat puts in a uspn rating and not an schrs

rating.

If I have guessed at the right class name for a boat in the schrs

table. rescorew will pull in the proper rating. the spread sheet indicates

SCHRS column.

When I use my out of date SINGLE ratings csv file from 2010 I only

get the PN list of boat classes… irrespective of the rating system that I

choose. However, I have harmonized the class names between schrs and uspn

in the csv file. with this csv file. I can switch between USPN and SCHRS

alternate scoring systems

So… How do i get it to use the SCHRS ratings table when I select

it.

My event is coming up in one week… rrrrgh.

Have you changed the tag for SCHRS… I downloade Hu Pearces SCHRS file

and my pull down list is blank. (restarted sailwave etc)

Data in a csv file has no formatting such as justification. Its just text (boat type in this case) or numbers (the rating) separated by commas.

If you open your ratings files with notepad, can you see any difference?

Hi Malcom - you are correct as always, although the files that Huw had supplied and I guess Wayne had derived his from a similar source had many invisible Hex A0 characters in it, which then causes Excel not to recognise it as a number and left justifies it, if viewed in Excel whereas a field that didn’t have the A0 looks like a number to Excel and it right justifies it. So this explains why Mark could see some fields as left and others as right justified. I agree with you totally that it is not what you expect in a csv file. I have stripped all the Hex A0 characters out of the current files so hopefully these will be OK. For any one who has a similar issue - I used the free and excellent Notepad++ with the Hex viewer plugin to both see and remove the A0 characters.

VICTORY!!!

Thanks, I eventually produced a csv spreadsheet with the crazy characters included and then punted.. I was not going to manually edit them out..... So the new files work as promised.

FYI, SCHRS is faced with a huge proliferation of catamran classes with ever more creative names. Nick D (SCHRS) has a naming system that might standardize this across rating systems ... Perhaps a marketing name as currently used and something like a taxonomic name might be useful in the future. I would imagine that each locale refers to a class by a common name which could mean something quite different across the pond.... A rating system file could then use common names and the taxonomic name for different purposes.. eg. Printing results and reporting results.

Thanks
