Recommend a Camcorder?

I am looking to buy a camcorder to record finishes from a committee boat.

It needs to be waterproofed (presumably in a case), able to record my voice calling the sail numbers
as boats cross the finish line and have a timer so that we can identify times for General Handicaps.
Also, it would be good if it did not 'weigh a ton' as I could be holding it for some 15-20 mins (on
some sort of frame to sit on my shoulder?)

Another consideration is the method of recording and playback. Manual recording systems are never
perfect and sometimes can cause unacceptable delays in posting the race results on the noticeboard.

I would like the option to be able to send the recorded media back to the clubhouse (by RIB as via
mobile/internet would be too expensive) so that someone can sit in a nice warm room and extract the
results from the recorded media, whilst we get on with starting another race. This means that
picture quality, freeze frame, playback a few frames and time display is a major consideration.

Suggestions on which manufacturer, model, specification to choose from would be gratefully
appreciated

Ralph

I didn't see any other responses to this post, so thought I'd better respond before it gets lost.

I've experimented with a video camera for starts and finishes while being race officer for minor club races - on an inland dam in light wind.

I held the camera in front of me on the boat, pointing down the line to the pin. This was mainly for the purposes of possible evidence for OCS incidents at the start and for verifying uncertainty with close finishes (after the race, the video could be set into `action replay'). Especially for starts, it was important for the camera to be doing its own thing, while I was concentrating on timing and checking boats being over the line early.

I hadn't considered it to be used for scoring, but it should be possible. Most video cameras can show date and time in the frame, but probably not seconds. This could be overcome by running a stop watch on shore against the video sequence. Most cameras also record audio and have good picture quality, freeze frame and even `anti-shake' However using a video camera in strong wind and/or at sea in a big swell would be difficult. (Most footage or still photos of sailing boats is done in light wind - photographers don't seem to like getting wet trying to capture scenes in adverse weather!)

My camera ( a Samsung), uses a Mini DV cassette, which could be transportd by RIB to shore. However, it would need another similar camera to play it back, as these cassettes don't fit into a VHS tape player. I think there is another (larger?) type of cassette wich can fit into an adapter for playback on a video machine - but that would require a different (older?) type of video camera.

Thanks for that Malcolm

There has been little response to this request for help so I can only presume that I am breaking new
ground with this approach.

Your comment are most useful as I have never owned a camcorder so needed to establish some sort of
specification.
References to action replay, anti-shake, freeze frame quality, seconds on the timer etc are great.
I also agree with you that the camera would not be the main source of information, purely a back up
to the race officer's call.

On the media side, I am hoping that there is some sort of mini DVD which can be replayed on a
computer rather than a TV.
It is my intention (dream??) to project information re the results etc through a projector linked to
a PC/laptop which can also play the visual recording if there are queries, rather than force sailors
into a protest room before they can see the evidence.

Some of you may recoil with horror at the thought of showing competitors possible mistakes but I do
not see anything wrong with letting competitors know that my actions have worsened their result &
suggesting that they go for redress.

Don't know how many race officers are members of SUG but will provide feedback later in the year if
it works.
If not I will have a cheap camcorder for sale ;-))

I think what you might need is a Digital CCTV recording system.

Like something at:

http://www.y3kvision.com/acatalog/pccctv4ver.html

This could be ideal if one camera is placed in the race hut which can record
the start line and audio of people taking in the race hut whilst calling
numbers of boats on every occasion a boat passes the start finish line. Plus
also recording any VHF messages reported by safety boats.

If possible, place the three other cameras to look at each of the turning
marks, to record any incidents at these points.

Quality of images will depend on quality of cameras, and equipment used

Not sure how or if this will work on a committee boat

Unfortunately we have a very large water with a headland in the way (Rutland if you are UK based) &
signals from CB to clubhouse are sometimes 'iffy'

From other comments, I am tending to go down the route of a camcorder on the CB with some sort of
mini DV? media which can be taken back on shore & displayed on a PC or digital Overhead projector.

Forgot to mention,

The reason why I thought using digital CCTV recording system on computer was
ideal, was because it allows you to review recorded footage whilst it
continues to record. Therefore if you had a few jump the gun, and needed to
look at the video footage to determine who they were, you can do so without
having to stop recording.

It will not be impossible fitting this (digital CCTV system) to a CB. The
only problem I saw with CB was that it might not be as easy to line the
camera up with the start line as it would turn if the boat turns. Therefore
you would need somebody tending the camera. But then you would probably have
to do that with a DV camera too.

Terry

I think what you might need is a Digital CCTV recording system.

Like something at:

http://www.y3kvision.com/acatalog/pccctv4ver.html

This could be ideal if one camera is placed in the race hut
which can record
the start line and audio of people taking in the race hut
whilst calling
numbers of boats on every occasion a boat passes the start
finish line. Plus
also recording any VHF messages reported by safety boats.

If possible, place the three other cameras to look at each of
the turning
marks, to record any incidents at these points.

Quality of images will depend on quality of cameras, and
equipment used

Not sure how or if this will work on a committee boat

Regards
Terry
