Recording finishers on a PC

Just returned from week off & reading all the sailwave emails (phew!!)
Lots of discussion re capturing finishing data & importing to Sailwave.

I have written some short code in Excel which allows typing in a sail
number, press enter to record the time & sort final data using a pivot
table.
As the pivot table shows lap times for each boat, this makes life very easy
when trying to work out how many laps a boat has done for Ave Lap racing or
checking that big class fleets have all completed the correct number of laps

It is very basic & needs making 'prettier' when I have tested it.
If anyone would like a copy, let me know, as it is not ready to put on the
web site yet.

My main problem is my laptop battery does not last long enough for a few
hours on the C Boat (even when it hibernates).
The only solution seems to be a new laptop or extra batteries - anyone got a
cheaper option??

Regards
Ralph Tingle

Get a small inverter, and run the laptop off the boat battery through
it.

Hi Ralph,
It depends on how your C boat is configured, but I've used a power invertor in the past (12Vdc in 240ac out) to power a PC. a 100W one will do it and you can pick them up for around £40 - £50. Also useful for charging phones, etc.

Regards,
Andy.

Hi all,

At Datchet Water last year we unfortunately had to get a new committee boat
(CB) after the previous one sank in a gale and was written off. In fitting
out the new CB, an Arvor Fish 21, we equipped it with capability of running
a portable PC at 240V AC using an invertor. The 12V battery (45Amp-hr) is
kept charged by two solar panels mounted on the roof of the boat. We decided
to keep the electrics for the engine and the PC completely separate.

We also have an invertor which plugs into a car cigarette lighter socket
attached to a 12V battery. This gives us a portable power source that
enables us to use a PC on our second CB which is not equipped with in-built
facilities to provide power.

One thing we have learnt is make sure that the PC battery is fully charged
before taking out to the CB, this means that the PC is only drawing minimal
current from the battery on the CB and therefore lasts for a much longer
time. We have unfortunately found that if the PC battery is discharged the
drain on the CB battery means it will only last one day, which at less sunny
times of year causes problems!.

We separate the functions of starting races, recording finish times and
calculating results between PROlog and Sailwave. One nice feature of PROlog
is that it can speak the the seconds part of the finish time using voice
synthesis.

I would prefer Sailwave to concentrate on producing race results but provide
the facility to import finish information in a documented format, currently
CSV, from other systems that help with start and/or finish time recording of
which there are several available.

Keep up the good work Colin and keep Sailwave the best race results program

Kind regards,
Huw
