Redrress Issue

We had a dismasting last night and one of the boats in the immediate area rendered assistance. We want to award that boat the position it was in at the time of the incident, but not alter the scores for the boats that finished.

I used RDG 3 and it scored 2 boats with value 3.0 as expected, but on our combined Overall Fleet based on TimePerMile corrected time and is aliased from the other 2 fleets, there was no 4.0. We give the Race Officer (RO, roughly equivalent
to OOD) a score of the average of their started races which in this situation was 4.2. I believe that the 5th place boat should have a score of 4.0 not 5.0 since they had a corrected TimePerMile of 4th best. How can I adjust so that
whatever RDG value is used, the boats below her are not pushed down a position?

Attached is the .blw for the situation which is in race 6 labelled SULP 6. The boat with RDG is Shadowfax and the boat that should have a better score is Just Relaxin’ in the Overall fleet.

Thanks,

Tom,

Look at the corrected times for the "Overall" class (which is just an
alias of the other two classes, Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker). They were:

Blue Heaven - 10:38
Blow'viate - 11:36
Mea Culpa - 12:23
Shadowfax - 12:53
Just Relaxin' - 13:17
Sol Adventurer - 14:31

So, Shadowfax was 4th fastest in the Overall class but gets awarded a
redress score of 3 points so now becomes an equal 3rd place boat
(ignoring Race Officer points for the moment). Since the scores of other
boats don't change, the 5th fastest boat (Just Relaxin') stays with
points for finishing 5th - 5 points.

Now add in your race officer with a score of 4.2 and that becomes your
new 5th place boat. Just Relaxin' gets pushed down to 6th place but
keeps the same number of points - 5 points.

I think this is scored exactly the way it should be unless there is
something more that you haven't included in your description. You
implied that Shadowfax didn't finish but she has a finish time entered
and so corrected times have been calculated for the two classes she is
in (Spinnaker and Overall). Perhaps that is wrong; if so, there is your
issue.

PS - Combining Spin and Non-Spin boats in a single class by using
"corrected time per mile" to score is something I've never seen before
and makes sense IF the non-spinnaker handicap rating adjustments are
fairly accurate and can be relied upon. Its something to remember when
you have boats sailing different length courses but want to score them
against each other for some kind of "overall" trophy - not ideal but
definitely a good solution to a very difficult problem.

Art,

I understand and the finish time for Shadowfax was “artificially created” to give them “finish-in-place” of 4th place/points. When changing to RDG
3, I should have deleted the finish and elapsed times since Shadowfax did not finish. When I make that change, it now calculates properly. Thanks for pointing out the oversight.
