Reseting windows

Hi Colin!!

I have a bit of an odd problem.

Up until a few weeks ago I had 2 monitors on my desktop, really handy
because I could have sailwave on one and excel on the other. since the
second screen left certain dialogue boxes like the one where you enter
results has disappeared, I suspect its displaying where the old screen
used to be.

is there any way of resetting where these box’s show up?

my replacement screen is due in a few days so its not a biggy.

Have you got the new boat yet??? it was so ruff here on Sunday
all the a-cats had to abandon, didn’t stop us nacra sailors

Cheers

Darren.

Darren,

If you are using a double head graphics card or two graphics cards does not matter but if you have extended your desktop across the two screens this can happen with one screen down - nothing to do with Sailwave.

I don’t know what operating system you are using but you need to go into

Control Panel

Display

click on the 'Settings tab'' and you should see two numbered screens. Click once on the screen that is equivalent in position to your failed screen then in the bottom left of the dialogue box click to untick the box labelled 'Extend my desktop on to this monitor'.

Now click ‘Apply’ and ‘OK’ and you should now have everything on one screen.

You may need to right click somewhere in a blank area of your screen and click on ‘Refresh’ to sort some icons out.

bad news is that if you had icons on the ‘dead screen’ they will now be scattered over your live one in appraently haphazard arrangement!!

When you get your second screen back go into the same display/settings box and reverse this process. With two dual VGA socketed graphics cards with NVidia chipsets you can get up to four screens - I sometimes use three!

This is all based on Windows 98 but something similar should be in 2000, ME or XP.

Hope this helps

Steve Willis

Thank Steve!

I’m on win XP and the second screen automatically disabled itself in the display properties.

Yeah had the MS haphazard thing happen with my icons

Just tried enabling and disabling, no go.

All my other programs seem to accepted the change, sailwave being the only bug bear.

Just had confirmation of the new screen shipping tomorrow, will be interesting when its hooked back up to see whats going where!

Darren,

Understood. I had this problem with Excel which I always used on the second screen then when the screen wasn’t there and I changed from full screen to part screen Excel disappeared.

Generally programme information will be stored away when you close it such that it will open on the relevant screen next time if it was full screen when you closed it.

A key thing is if you are using an NVidia graphics set in your graphics card you will probably find an NVidia Desktop Manager icon in Control Panel.

If there is, open it and click on the ‘Windows’ tab in the dialogue box that opens and the bottom half of the dialogue box allows you to select where dialogue boxes are to appear - several choices and yours may be set to monitor 2 - best to have it on the application screen - I do this and then drag the dialogue box to the other screen if I need it out of the way when it is open.

If it is not locked into this by that selection one way you can normally solve it is to open the programme (Sailwave in this case) select it to part screen do something like open and close a series and then select full screen and close the programme then open it and close it again. I found this can encourage Windows to store the right information away.

It is a real pain but having two screens is a real bonus - I often use Excel on one with Word, Access, Sailwave or my weather station open on the other. Good news if your monitor is coming so quickly.

Regards and best of luck

Steve Willis

Hi Darren,

I’ve just added this to the help file:-

···

Sailwave remembers the size and position of each window it opens. Sometimes after changing screen resolution, monitor or graphics card Sailwave will seem to loose window positions, opening partially of wholly off screen. Sailwave does compensate for this but cannot always tell that it’s happening.

To force all windows back to their default positions please delete this file:-

c:\windows\sailwave.ini

If you do not have a c:\windows folder see if there is a sailwave.ini in c:\winnt.

This will also reset some other settings like the read status of one-time messages. This does not affect your Setup+GlobalOptions settings.

Right Click on the Task (Start) Bar in the grey area. Select "Tile Windows

I tried that too!

will delete the .ini files tonight Colin, thanks! I did search through
the archives and no one else seemed to have the problem in all this
time.

I feel for your car ride! when we collected our boats last year (3
of us from our club brought new boats) for us it was a 6000
kilometer round trip!

Cheers

Hi Colin

I am sure many of us use Memory Stick “Dongles”
that plug into the USB port to save our work whilst recording results.

I do – I have had TWO laptops go on
me.

Would it be possible to have a “Save
As” and a “Save As Also” or “Also Save As”

Then when you click on Save or Save As, it
saves to your machine, or wherever you have set it up to.

Then when you click “Also Save As”,
it can save to your Dongle.

James,

I don't have one of those "dongles"... so I feel a bit depraved.

But I do have an external hard drive and two zip drives (one at home and the other in my office). I frequently back files up to the external hard drive and/or zip disks. The "file, save as" function on just about all Windows applications work fine for saving withthe same name to a different folder and/or drive.

Al G.
