It’s easier indeed, but the re-calculation is often the fair solution.
A good example to show the difference
In the Micro Class, there are three divisions ranging from “Prototypes”, production “Racers” and “Cruisers”.
In the World Championship 2003, the NoR was stating the the ranking was to be calculated for the medals for Racers and Cruisers.
50% of the 30 boats did not finish the first race due to bad weather and waves.
But two thirds of the 12 more seaworthy Cruisers survived, half of the two Racers and no more than 40% of the Protos.
This race was discarded, but the influence of this first race and “pollution” of boats not belonging to the division was shown in an extracted ranking.
So Cruisers, deemed to get 15 points or more, and finishing this race received 15 or less, and the only racer was a not very glorious 13th.
The two Racers were 10 points from each other in overall ranking but tyes (1-(2)-2-1 vs (DNF)-1-1-2, 4 point each) in a calculated ranking. Happily, tye breaking was giving the medal to the first boat in overall ranking.
For Cruisers, the second did not finish the first race ((DNF)-14-15-14 =43 overall, but (DNF)-2-1-1 in division ranking), the first in overall was 9-(19)-16-17=42 overall but 2-(5)-2-4 in division ranking.
The Race Committee ranked the Championship on easily extracted ranking.
At the end of prize giving, the an irritated skipper ranked 2nd protested the Race Committee on NoR and requested a separate ranking, and this was perfect right.
We tried to convince the International Jury that the official ranking was wrong, sadly the protest was rejected.
Two weeks later, the chairman of the International Jury was shot down in a street of Moscow. The Russian Police did not investigate about a very irritated Polish crew…
Lessons learned from this ranking, the extracted rankings were clearly polluted by failing material in the Protos division…

I have to say that when I write Sailing Instructions these days, I tend to state that prizes for categories are based upon their position in the overall regatta.
This overcomes the problems which you are having, especially when the results will be delayed whilst they are re-computed in a spreadsheet.
I get involved in lots of regattas of this type & have had many arguments in the bar when results for a specific category are extracted.
I have seen on occasions, the winner of the category prize finishing behind another boat in that category in the overall regatta!
Try explaining how that can happen to an irate competitor/parent who doesn’t understand the mathematics
Since moving to highest placed in the overall regatta, I have never had a problem & everyone is happy.
It is a simple process to then cast your eye down the final results & see which is the highest placed in each category
Just make sure that the scoring & prizegiving methods are in the NOR or SIs & there is no complaint
Colin tries to read most emails so he will probably see this one.
I doubt however, if it will make it on to the development list as I don’t think this request has been made for a very long time.
Most users of SW seem to be happy with the current options

[sailwave] Re: results
I have come to the same conclusion my self and i am exporting to
excel.
This does seem like a basic flaw in sailwave as most championships
now have different categories to spread the prizes down the fleet.
A complete prise list that could be published and be populated by a
field would be one way.
Does anybody else have any other ideas, how can we add this to the
improvements list.

Sorry, did not realise that a competitor could be in more than one
category
If you are awarding prizes by the competitor’s final position in
the overall regatta it may be
necessary to use the old-fashioned eyeball or sorting the data in a
spreadsheet.
If you need to extract & declare results independently for each
category, then it’s a bit more
difficult
I haven’t tried this but what about having a column for each
category & enter Y (or something
similar) against the competitor if they are in that category
You could then score & re-score by each category column
I think this make sense …
If not, you may need to wait until other members of SUG have
recovered from last night’s
celebrations

I have all ready tried this, the problem I have is that a
competitor
can be in two or more categories i.e. lady helm and master and may
even have a junior crew.
I have tried using the prise list but it only publishes the first
in
each category.

Populate an extra column with the category
When you score the series, chose ‘Score Groups of competitors
separately’
In the Grouping field, select the column (field) that you used
above
This will then produce results for each category

Subject: [sailwave] results
I am tying to score a series with competitors in different
category
i.e. master, lady helm, lady crew etc. The problem I am having is
if I
use fleets you can only be in one fleet at a time, the competitor
could
be a master and a lady helm. I need to produce full results of
each
category.
Can any body help?
