RRS Appendix B Rule 8

In Sailwave, is there any way to follow B9 A8 Series Ties as it changes RRS A8 automatically?

Do you really mean B9 A8 Series Ties?

Perhaps you could explain what you would like to happen

Thanks Jon

I presume you actually mean B8 A8?

If so - select Setup / User Interface / Non standard series tie options.

Then, under Scoring System / Series Scoring, an option is given - Apply Appendix B 8.8 . The note indicates that this is applied before rule A 8.

Presumably, the note means that B8.1 and B8.2 are applied before A8.2 is
applied. B8.3 is the same as A8.2 (only one word difference) but B8.2
differs significantly from A8.1 so you wouldn't want to apply A8.1 when
you should have applied B8.2.

The difference between A8.1 and B8.2 is that A8.1 excludes discards when
comparing scores and B8.2 includes discards.

B8.1 is strange to me because it uses "best discard" even if the normal
tie-breaking of A8.1 would resolve the tie.

Example (6 races; two discards):

Boat X: 3,3,3,3,6,9 (listed best to worst with 6 and 9 discards)
Boat Y: 2,2,4,4,7,7 (listed best to worst with two 7 discards)

Boat X wins B8.1 tiebreaker (best discard) but Boat Y would have won the
A8.1 tiebreaker (with a best non-excluded score of 2nd). If Boat Y was
discarding 6 and 7 instead of 7 and 7 then the boats would have equal
"best discards" and it would go to B8.2, which Boat Y would win with a
best score of 2nd compared to X's best score of 3rd.

Probably a tad tricky to get right if you were doing by hand and weren't
familiar with App. B tiebreaking rules. Stuff like this is why a scoring
program like Sailwave is so beneficial - it just does it the same way
every time without any thinking on your part!

We need to apply the following

B8 text

A8 SERIES TIES

Rule A8 is changed to:

A8.1 If there is a series-score tie between two or more boards, they

shall be ranked in order of their best excluded race score.

A8.2 If a tie remains between two or more boards, each board’s race

scores, including excluded scores, shall be listed in order of

best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a

difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the board(s) with

the best score(s). These scores shall be used even if some of

them are excluded scores.

A8.3 If a tie still remains between two or more boards, they shall be

ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining

ties shall be broken by using the tied boards’ scores in the nextto-

last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores

shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.
