Rules again...
(and it's Friday and I'm 'babysitting')
Something that happens a lot at our club (in the cat fleet) is that boats
coming in fast for a timed start shout 'up' loudly at boats waiting nearer
the start; they seem to think they have ROW even before they have an
overlap.
As I understand it the rules are as follows.
The boat waiting nearer the start line, with sails out and stationaryish
need not do *anything* (Rule 12) until the boat storming up to leeward has
establish an overlap (Rule 11). At that time the stationary must start
pulling in her sails and make all efforts to get out of the way while the
leeward boat gives her time to do so (14,15,16).
Further, if *when* the overlap is established by the faster leeward boat,
the windward boat would hit the committee boat (or boundary buoy) by trying
to keep clear, she does not need to do so.
i.e. you can't just come up as fast as you like to leeward and try to barge
everybody into the committee boat.
Is this a correct interpretation of the rules?
We have lots of banter about how long it takes to pull in sails and start to
keep clear etc...

Colin J
