Running a series which counts for two (three) Events.

Hi everybody,
I need advise for this problem:

I will have to score an three-day event next week which combines the international german championships in raceboard class with the german masters in the same class.
Some starters will just be in the igc-ranking, some starters only in the gm-ranking and others in both rankings.

there will also have to be rankings after gender, sailsize(division) and age, i fear.

i hope you can understand my problem; what is the easiest way to get separated the results for both classes? series will sport 10 races with two discards.

to get it more complex, from day two on there will be more starters on the line for the german youth championships, which will be on the same start and finish line with the rest of the field.
I think it is impossible to do this all in one sailwave file, since the youth will only have eight races with two discards. so i will split at that point.

anybody who can help me out?

Best regards, Thorsten

Hi Thorsten,

I scored a similar event this Weekend.

It was a 3 day event counting as a UKWA cup series and the first 2 days counting as North Sea Cup event.

I used the Club field to hold values as to which events the competitors were competing in. e.g. “UKWA & NS” or “NS only” - it doesn’t have to be the club field it can be any field.

Then using the Tools - Set competitor I set the exclude field. As an example set the exclude field to 0 for all competitors then set to 1 for “club <> NS only” then rescore the event

and then using the same procedure select the next set of competitors and score the event.

Will this work for you?

Hi Thorsten,

I should have added to my previous reply.

I assume that rankings for gender division and age are for prizes based on the results. You can do this with the Setup - prizes built into Sailwave or you can use my Prize program which I think does exactly what you want, details are at Prize program details and you can download a copy from there. Have a go and let us know if you need any more suggestions.

By using fleets you should also be fine to have some fleets only having 8 races and the others 10 in the same file

Hope this helps

Hi Thorsten,

If you score by fleet and there are no competitors for that fleet in the race then Sailwave will automatically ignore that race, for that fleet.

Hope that helps

Hi Jon,
thanks for your fantastic support!
One more question:
is it possible to create Age groups (U13, U15, U17 etc. automatically?
I found no Field for date of birth (which also would be helpful to examine if one competitor has to be under parental guidance) but in the group i´ve read about entering the date of birth in the private notice field. I´m just not able to bring this all together, maybe you can answer in a separate thread or the FAQ?

Hi Thorsten,

There is a competitor field that stores the age for both helm and

for classes with crew, crew age. You may have to turn on extra
competitor fields in the User pop-up window. The field is shown on
the All Crew tab followed by the Helm | Crew or other tabs for other
positions which are usually on big boats.

The field is labelled '*Age or age group* ' ad can be used to

date of birth or an age group category. A tip if you stree date of
birth in the field is enter it in YYYYMMDD format, for example
20130531; you will then be able to sort on the field in a logical
way for dates.

You can use any competitor field in Sailwave to store the data you

want, all the fields have default name which can be altered to
something more appropriate to the person doing the scoring and/or
event.

Hope this helps.
Kind regards,
Huw

Hi Jon

Having an age group field would be very useful. I tend to have to calculate this in Excel on each event.
There would need to be a reference date because sometimes it the start of an event, sometimes the end, and sometimes December 31.

Hi Adrian,

At the events I score I use the “Age or Agegroup” field to hold the age or age group depending upon the class. And store the Date of Birth if I have/need it in the Private Notes field.

At all the events I score the “Age or Agegroup” is always their age at the 31st December of the year.

So typically this field has U15, U17, U20, M for Master, V for Veteran and SV for Super Vet. At qualifier events where selectors what to know the age I have 12,13,14,15,16,17,18 as well. This field gets published but the Private Notes field with the date of birth is set to not publish.

As ages are for 31/12/xx they don’t change for the year. As Huw said, you can rename any column to be called date of birth. Calculating the age group from a stored date of birth is something I have planned when the database version is released.

Hi Jon,
i´ve played around a bit and ran into the following problem:
Entered my competitors list and separated them to 3 Fleets:
IDM, GM and GY. Fleet IDM will have two separate Starts at Friday, 4 starts with all Fleets together on Saturday, 4 with all fleets in on Sunday.
Fleets GM and GY will have only the starts at Saturday and Sunday. Problem: Some competitors have to be scored on both fleets IDM and GM. I have created an alias for those ones and set the Fleet to GM on the alias. Problem is how to exclude the first two races from scoring for Fleet GM, since through the "alias competitors" all real competitors in Fleet GM will get scored with DNC for the first two races.

any idea?

Hi all,
i´ve found a solution for my problem:
set up everything as described below,

PLUS:
Set up two Starts in Race one and two; first Start for Fleet=IDM, second Start for Fleet=GM
Then set the Weighting for the GM to 0.1 so it scores 0 for each alias competitor and also for the real ones (which are listet DNC)

at least set a second scoring system for Fleet GM with first discard after 7 races instead of 5. Seems to work out perfectly.

Any other tips or a more elegant way?

Best regards, Thorsten

Fleets GM and GY will have only the starts at Saturday and Sunday. Problem: Some competitors have to be scored on both fleets IDM and GM. I have created an alias for those ones and set the Fleet to GM on the alias. Problem is how to exclude the first two races from scoring for Fleet GM, since through the "alias competitors" all real competitors in Fleet GM will get scored with DNC for the first two races.

any idea?

Hi Thorsten,

If I understand the problem correctly. One possible solution may be to set those races where the DNC occurs to be “Discard me first” (in the edit starts) and change the discard profile for that fleet to have an extra 2 discards - so they would be always discarded

Unless anyone can think of a better solution

Hi Jon,

Thanks for the quick response!

Tomorrow will be a holiday where i live,

so i will take the time and put the competitors in to play around a bit.

i thougt about the fleets for the races also- how can i manage only the

last

8 races will be scored for the youth fleet? maybe you can help me out

again.

there will be 2 races in day one counting for igm/gm, day two and three

will

have 4 races per day for all three fleets.

best regards,

Hi Thorsten,

I should have added to my previous reply.

I assume that rankings for gender division and age are for prizes based

on the results. You can do this with the Setup - prizes built into

Sailwave or you can use my Prize program which I think does exactly what

you want, details are at Prize program details

<https://sites.google.com/site/eskdalesite/home/swprize> and you can

download a copy from there. Have a go and let us know if you need any

more suggestions.

By using fleets you should also be fine to have some fleets only having

8 races and the others 10 in the same file

Hope this helps

i hope you can understand my problem; what is the easiest way to get

separated the results for both classes? series will sport 10 races with

two discards.

to get it more complex, from day two on there will be more starters on

the line for the german youth championships, which will be on the same

start and finish line with the rest of the field.

I think it is impossible to do this all in one sailwave file, since

the youth will only have eight races with two discards. so i will split

at that point.

anybody who can help me out?

Best regards, Thorsten

Hi Jon,
I also thought first about doing this by an additional discard scheme, i tried it but it didin´t work out. if i re-think it i made an error setting up the discard scheme.
my prior described solution by weighting the points has a flaw, because the smallest value you can set for the Factor is 0.01. So if yout get over 100 competitors, there will be points added. Maybe it is possible in future editions to make the value smaller, e.g. 0.001? I think it was made the way it ist to avoid division by zero-errors.

Best regards, Thorsten

Hi Jon,
setting up the right discard rule worked it out.
Plus having the weighting set it shows no = Point which become discarded for the tweo first races.
