RYA NHC Rules and Calculations

I’ve tried to find a document that explains the actual calculation rules for 2014 so that I can explain what is happening to our Race Committee, but have had little luck. I did find what appears to be the document for 2013 at http://www.rya.org.uk/SiteCollectionDocuments/technical/Web%20Documents/NHC/ResultsProgrammeCalculations.pdf. Is there a similar document for 2014?

Thanks,

Hi Tom,

The RYA have promised to update the website shortly with the new documentation but the department is currently short handed !

In the mean time the attached document was the discussion document. I haven’t attached the mentioned spreadsheet as there were a few errors in the sheet and as you have Sailwave you have the final template and can see how the calculations are made if you use the external calculation mode.

One thing that was added later was that there is no change to any ratings if less than 3 boats finish a race, which is included in the current version of Sailwave.

But a summary is based on the performance in a race, the new ratings are calculated, the standard deviation of the changes are calculated and the extreme performers are identified. The ratings of the extreme performers are adjusted at a slower rate than the others. The ratings of the boats that competed are realigned with the base numbers. But no adjustments are made if there are less than 3 finishers. If you study the Excel sheet produced when you score in external mode all the calculations are visible.

Hope this helps

Jon
