Does anybody have experience of using sailwave to input to the RYA PH
return.
I have added all of our series results for the year into one
'mega-series' and then tried to use the 'estimate rating' function
acros s the full set of results. The relative results seem to be
pretty realistic in terms of which fleets sail to their handicaps, but
no fleet seems to sail to its current PH handicap. The best fleets
seem to be about 2% slower than their PH handicap
From a YR2 perspective, not discounting the last 1/3 & poor performers in
each race, for a start! You really need to extract the results from
Sailwave and crunch the #'s externally. Sorry.....
As for Sailwave, I've not used the 'Estimate Rating' function, but from I
suspect that it works on whoever's first in a given race having the right
rating; that is everyone else is slower. Hence if you average over lots of
sailors (not all of which will be first in every race) you will get a
'slower' rating. However I'd encourage you to plot a graph of the
difference between PY and the Sailwave suggested ratings and then fit a low
order polynomial trend line, which should show which fleet needs adjusting
in which direction (assuming that you have enough boats racing not to need
to apply the dreaded Crew Skill Factor).

Mark,
We had a sailing committee meeting last night where PYNs were debated as we
have similar problems. I would be interested to see the numbers you have
derived could you publish them on the newsgroup?
It would be interesting to have sight of the RYA from other clubs
anonymously of course, I would assume that this would be easy using the RYA
electronic return,
Regards,
Geoff
