RYA PYonline

I’m looking for some help please!

My club was missing a sailing secretary last season and I have taken on the role. I am trying to upload all our results from last year to the RYA PYonline site (via the Sailwave plugins).

However the date is in the wrong format (needs to be yyyy-mm-dd). Is there a quick and easy way of changing this for a whole series? I have worked out how to do it for an individual races but that would take a long time!

Many thanks

Dave

Hi Dave,

Interesting problem. Quick question - are all the dates in a

consistent wrong format? If so it might make it easier to do some
bulk editing.

Kind regards,

Huw

I thought PY online was amended a few years ago to accept multiple date formats. Chris Gandy?

Hi Huw

I’ve just checked a few different series and all the ones I’ve checked are in the same format (dd/mm/yy).

So how do I bulk edit??

Best regards

Dave

For information, the message I get is:

Version: 2.19.8
Installed: Unknown
Time: 19:27:34
Date syntax error for R1, It must be of the form yyyy-mm-dd.

···

Date: 22 February 2017

Hi Dave,

Yes that is the error I would expect.

Re bulk edit - I need to have a little look at a Sailwave.blw

file to refresh my memory and the decide an appropriate way for
Windows platform {I take it you are using Sailwave under some
version of Windows].

How many files of results do you have that you want to upload and

how many races in each typically?

FYI - a Sailwave.BLW file is just a straight text file, but

editing it COULD mess it up.

Kind regards,

Huw

Hi Huw

I have about 10 series to upload with typically 12 races each (max 20).

Yes I am on Windows 10, I think.

I’ll have to make sure I have copies before I start anything.

Dave

Hi Dave,

Doing that in Sailwave will be quite slow.

Yes having backups of all files is very important because as I

said previously it is possible to corrupt the file for Sailwave
even if it looks OK.

By careful editing in Notepad I think it will be quicker even

though still manual.

Using find in Notepad the string you need to search for is

“racedate” which is the start of a line with fields separated by a

Dav,

If the editing in notepad doesn’t help I’d be happy to help upload if you wanted.

Chris

Hi Dave,

A quick program I just knocked up to convert date formats from dd/mm/yy to yyyy-mm-dd

you can download it from https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/220425/Swdatecvt.EXE

Inline images 1

run the above program - it will default to the last file opened with Sailwave or you can type in the path and file name

Click convert and it should be done.

Let me know if it works for you

Jon

Hi Paul and Chris - I can confirm that PY online will reject any date which is not in the yyyy-mm-dd format.

The field in Sailwave is a free form field as it was primarily for the user to print the race date on their results, so they can use any format that suits their report format- Its not used for any calculations within Sailwave. There are so many International formats that a fully automated conversion is difficult but perhaps PY online could accept some of the more standard ones. Although dd/mm/yy and mm/dd/yy is a bit more difficult to determine unless you check all the dates and hopefully deduce which format it is.

I’ve posted a quick and simple utility that will convert the Sailwave dates from dd/mm/yy to yyyy-mm-dd but its not the full answer as now if user publish their results again they will get the yyyy-mm-dd format printed on the results. I like the yyyy-mm-dd format as a programmer but unfortunately we are not going to change the world over night.

Jon

Thanks Jon.

Thanks Jon, As I too went through this
process earlier this year using a convoluted spread sheet, this will be much
better and will save changing the way we record the results as the RYA date
format is not what we want on the published results.

Can I suggest if anyone has multiple series to upload just merge then
into one series can be very quick and then run Jon’s program

thanks Again

Keith

Hi Jon

Thank you very much, I appreciate your help on this.

As soon as I can get your programme through my computer’s security I’ll give it a go and let you know how I get on!

Merging the files also seems a good idea since I have quite a few.

Dave

Dave,

Probably just as quick to do each file separately as merge that

many. Also easier to solve if have any problems.

Just my two cents worth

Kind regards,

Huw
