RYA - YR2 Handicap and Other Handicap Calculations with Sailwave 2.9.4

This demonstrates how you can design you own progressive handicap system or just do YR2 or similar calculations.

I thought I would share this as some people might still be using the YR2 calculations and it is also a good example of how you can use the NHC facility of Sailwave to do other things - I’m sure lots of you out there can think of other uses. So for this example I’ve taken the YR2 calculation spreadsheet from the RYA site and made a few - not many changes. I’ve also added a config worksheet to tell Sailwave how to populate it. So now if you take one of your existing sailwave files - Change the rating system to NHC club external - you would previously have been using PY. Sailwave will still calculate in PY. When you rescore now the YR2 spreadsheet will appear and be populated with all the data for the first race. Click next and you get the next race - Cool !!

One thing to note is that I’m feeding elapsed times into the spread sheet by having the race start time as 00:00:00 and the elapsed times have been adjusted for average laps if the boats do more than one lap by the SWHelper before inserting into the spreadsheet.

As the spread sheet template is configured it does not change the handicap for the next race but you could easily change it to adjust the handicap for the next race if you so wanted.

Let us know what else you use this for.

Make sure you have Sailwave 2.9.4 installed and update the SWHelper.exe to a later version from here SWHelper.exe This replaces the one in the Program Files\Sailwave directory. The template file available here SWNHC3YR2.xls needs to go where ever you have configured your “My templates” to be. See Setup - Global Settings - Folders - My Templates. Don’t place it in the Sailwave\Templates directory. Files placed in the My Templates folder take precedent over the ones in the Sailwave\Templates folder. To make it use this template rename the file SWNHC3YR2.xls in the My Templates folder to be SWNHC3.xls As the template must always called SWNHC3.xls. When you want to use the standard NHC system just rename the file something other than SWNHC3.xls e.g. SWNHC3YR2.xls and it will use the template that is in the default Template directory

Hi Jon,

We have finished our regatta and all went very well with SW 2.8.5

I have now installed SW 2.9.4 to try to use the handicapping system. On scoring a copy file of our current series I get this error:

Any ideas?

I have now changed my files as suggested in this email, even though I do not understand what ‘YR2’ calculations are.

I no longer get the error message I recently posted.

You state that:

‘As the spread sheet template is configured it does not change the handicap for the next race but you could easily change it to adjust the handicap for the next race if you so wanted.’

I do want the program to change the handicap for the next race. How do I do that?

Hi Rob,

Glad your Regatta went well.

First you can’t use the test with NHC because there are different versions of it Club, Regatta, and even your own versions.

So just that I understand you are going to try and create your own handicap system is that correct?

What I suggest you do first is get used to the system and see how it works using NHC club and the sample file and in your case using the Ext/Debug mode. This should all work and you should not get any errors and you can see how the system works. Now as you are not in the UK and you want to create your own handicap system you can just modify the SWNHC3.xls template to use what ever rules you want. The YR2 is an earlier Handicapping system from the RYA details can be found here http://www.rya.org.uk/sitecollectiondocuments/technical/Web%20Documents/2007%20Portsmouth%20Yardstick%20Scheme/2007%20Instructions%20for%20Worksheet.pdf

The YR2 template in this thread demonstrates how you can change the system to use your own design. The YR2 template uses PY ratings where as the NHC uses TCF (although there is an automatic conversion built in just for testing purposes). If you look at the Config Worksheet you can specify how you want Sailwave to populate the spreadsheet and where it picks up the next race rating. In the YR2 example it is just set to pickup the next race rating as being the same as the starting - but you can change the template to make it do what ever you like.

Have a play with the sample file and see if the NHC club template works with your blw file by changing the scoring system to NHC club ext mode. If it doesn’t email me the file directly and I’ll have a look at it.

Always let me know what version of Sailwave and version of SWHelper you are using when you are testing as it makes my job easier to give the correct answers.

Hi Jon,

Yes, I want to convert my current handicap sw file to an NHC file.

Since I have used your new SWHelper file and the SWNHC3.xls file that was installed with 2.9.4, I get NO errors and the program seems to create handicaps.

I had to change my handicap formula (c=60*r+e) where ‘r’ is the rating (or handicap) in minutes. I am looking at how I can convert the handicap created my the program to a rating in minutes to use in our racing. What we like to do is have a staggered start where the slower boats start first and the fastest last, to hopefully getting everyone finishing at the same time.

How do I know what version of SWHelper I am running?

Hi Rob,

If you would like to send my your BLW file so I can see what you are working with - I can give you more specific advice. You can always create another column in the spreadsheet and then get excel to calculate the timings for the stagger start.

To see the version of the SWhelper.exe either hover over it in windows explorer or right click it and look at the properties - details and it will display the version.

& nbsp;See Setup - Global Settings - Folders - My Templates. Don’t place it in the Sailwave\Templates directory. Files placed in the My Templates folder take precedent over the ones in the Sailwave\Templates folder. Hi Rob,

Sorry for the delay - I’ve been a bit tied up do a few changes. But is this along the lines of what you are trying to do?

Inline images 1

When you click rescore and the excel sheet is displayed I’ve added 2 columns as shown above to the template

You can then enter the Duration and finish time of the next race and press F9 to recalculate. It then displays the start time for all the boats such that they should all finish at the specified time you entered.

Download the latest SWHelper and replace the existing one from here

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/220425/SWHelper.EXE

The Template with these changes is attached SWNHC3.xls Save this to some location and then make sure that you setup the Global options - Folders - MyTemplates to point to the location of this file

Let me know how you get on

Hi Jon,

Our fleet is so diverse, the duration for the race can be up to 30 mins difference from one boat to the other (for example, our handicap is currently 30 mins, we are giving a slower boat that head start.

When you say

‘You can then enter the Duration and finish time of the next race and press F9 to recalculate’

Does that mean I enter the expected finish time and the duration of the slowest or fastest boat?

& nbsp;See Setup - Global Settings - Folders - My Templates. Don’t place it in the Sailwave\Templates directory. Files placed in the My Templates folder take precedent over the ones in the Sailwave\Templates folder.

Hi Rob,

It does use the average of the fleet but it does include those that did not sail in that race as well. But as it doesn’t know who is going to sail in the next race at this point in time that is probably the best it can do. So if you set it to 1hr 30 Mins some will be faster and some slower. You see the times immediately so if you think its going to be too slow or too fast you can change it and press F9 again.

Hi Rob,

Sorry for the delay - I’ve been a bit tied up do a few changes. But is this along the lines of what you are trying to do?
