Sail Number Wizard

Hi Colin: I've been thinking about the SNW in the aftermath of the
Regatta and realize that it does a few odd things. Nothing very
serious but a nuisance.
We have a lot of boats with sail numbers such as GBR 1, POL 929, USA 1
and so on, as well as all numeric. First, SNW didn't seem to like the
space between letters and numbers and I had to set 6 significant
numbers to ID the boats. Day 2 I went through and took out the space.
Slightly better. Now SNW would ID USA1 with 4 significant digits set
but it would not see GBR1. A second issue was that in one fleet we had
CAN625 who was always first and 625 who was lower down the fleet. SNW
would never recognize CAN 625 until 6 significant digits were set.
Then I would reset to 4 significant digits and continue data entry.
When 625 arrived SNW always gave a choice of two boats CAN 625 and
625. Why was it seeing CAN 625 the second time around when it didn't
see it the first time? A further problem was that most 4 and more
digit numbers were IDd with 4 significant digits set. But some 4digit
numbers were not IDd. I had to run the significant digit selector up
and down then suddenly it would ID a boat. Very odd.
Finally, I run all fleets separately. So I enter results for one fleet
then have to close SNW, start it again to enter a different fleet ie
so the first boat is scored 1st. It would be handy to have a button in
the SNW to allow data entry to reset to 1. At the moment users have to
close the SNW, go the toolbar and reopen the Wizard. A small point but
anything that saves time is 'A good thing' as Martha Stewart would
say. There seem to be many regattas that do high volume results entry.
I do about 1200 in a weekend, and I notice in 'Butt the other day that
Newport had done 1500. So anything that slows data entry is not good.
Page 1 of the SNW, where one sets the race number, would be a good
place for a button. Bye, Donald

I have made some notes and will experiment with the sail no wizard the next time to an upgrading it.
