Sailing For Ostend

Hi group,

I have to score a major dinghy event (80 to 140 participants expected)
this week-end in Ostend Belgium
There will be several classes attending and also several paticipants in
small fleets of different boats.
We will have 2 race areas (one windward-leeward and one Trapezoid)
Contenders will be allocated to one race area for the duration of the
event.

Should I make one file with all participants or make a file par race
area or best one file par class?
I set up (in my mind) to make one file only where fleet 1 is race area
1 and fleet 2 is race area 2 but i'm not shure if this is the best way.

I'm a sailwave user since a couple of years but only for individual
races (not with different race areas and mucho participant)

Any feed-back is more then welcome

Thx
Danny Vyvey

Hi Danny

My approach to the decision has been based upon how many sets of results will I get.
In your situation, you will probably have two sets, for two courses, so two files (one per race
area).

You do not identify whether it is class racing or general handicap but presumably you will still be
having boats from various classes/fleets crossing the line at similar times.

Sailwave is excellent in sorting fleets & positions for you.
If your CB produces a simple list of boats in the order that they crossed the line, you can enter
this list using the sail number wizard & SW can then score by fleet (or as a whole if it is a
general handicap). You just need to decide your fleets i.e which classes are scored together

The beauty of setting up SW in this way, is that you make life easier for the team on the committee
boat.
With large fleets, if the recorders have to write down finishing places in different columns for
different fleets, they will certainly miss some finishers. They will thank you for making their life
easy if they simply have to write down a list of class and sail number.

If you have some fleets which are a single class and others which are a general handicap, don't
forget to set up the different types of racing for each fleet (as I did once & got into a total
mess!!)

Hope this helps

Regards
Ralph

Alamitos Bay YC has run regattas with three racing areas using a single Sailwave series. It becomes a little complicated if you have a different number of races on the racing areas. In that case you might want to consider one series per area and merge them to a single result set using the SailWave merge feature.

Thanks

I will have different race numbers for the 2 race areas and probably
different race numbers on the individual race areas for some classes
so things will become complicated.
I think I will set up 2 series as Ralph sugjested and see whats
happens during the race. My only job this event is the scoring so
between races I can adjust as long as I get the results right by the
end of the week-end.
But I will use my usual back-up (pencel and paper)

Many thanks

Worked like a charm.
Thank you Ralph and everybody contributing to the development of
