Sailwave and Linux

Hey,

is anybody here using Sailwave successfully on a Linux system with a
Windows emulator? I have tried with the latest version of Wine, but I
couldn't get it work (install went ok, but it crashes right after
start)...

(VMware is not an alternative as it still requires a copy of Windows)

Of course a native Linux version would be even better - are there any
plans on work in that direction?

Peter

Hello Peter

I would also love a native version for Linux. I have written a few bash
scripts which I run on all my series files. They pump out information
about how many entered each series or the global picture of who sailed
the most in the club series. I have had notions of writing a Linux
version, but my coding skills would have to be brushed off seriously,
and a proper explanation of the Sailwave file format would have to be
given.

Hi Peter/Dave

Sailwave is written in Clarion (www.softvelocity.com) which does target *ix
platrforms and I'm afraid there is absolutely no change that I could get the
time to develop eparallel applicaitons. SoftVelocity are not agist the idea
of extending the target platforms but I'm not sure they have any firm plans.

But there must be an emulator that will supoort it; I use nil MS toys to try
and help in this area...

It may be worh googling for "clarion" and "linux" "emulation" etc -
especially the groups 0 I know that one of the emulators was not stable
under Clarion...

PS: Not that I've done my last 'shape' tweak I an pump out the series as XML
if that helps.

Hi Colin

I have done just as you mentioned and came up with Jaguar. Take a look
at http://www.softmasters.com.ar/eng/jaguar.html. Although this
generates Java code from your Clarion App <Shivers>. I guess Java is not
a totally bad way of making an app work. Although, the serious stuff I
have seen in Java can take every last bit of resources on your average
machine and turn it into a smoking spot.

They are also mentioning the Open Source Mono project at
http://www.go-mono.org/. Perhaps we should keep an eye on these and see
if anything can be done by using them.

Hi Dave,

Unfortunately I don't think the Jaguar route is practical; there are two
ways of writing Clarion applications, the first is to just use the templates
and avoid at all costs writing any code youself - you can get apps using
that route but they are a bit clunky and very limited in scope. The second
is to not use the templaets and hand code everything in the Clarion language
itself; this is the Sailwave route and unfortunately it would mean changing
all the hand coded code to Java which is impractical. I'll post a few
messages on the Clarion newsgroups asking which Windows emulator on *ix/Mac
people find works best with Clarion apps.

Hi,

Has anyone had any further success with getting Sailwave working under
linux? I've got it installed but it gets stuck when asking for the
conditions of use (1.90 build 3). Is there anyway to trick this screen
through one of the ini files?

Thanks for any feedback.

Excuse me if this is a silly question. Looking at published results, What is
Nett and how is this calculated?

Thanks in advance

Regards
Terry

Never Mind, Just remembered this takes into account the discards.

It was a silly question.

Thanks again

Regards
Terry

when you calculate all scores, and remove all discards; You’ll get the NETT points…
