There is, but the formula is not available in SW.
The problem occurs very often for races ending close to sunset.
The boats have to finish the last lap after the fixed time within reasonable
limits. (n laps)
1. You record all times a boat rounds the finish mark
2. You take the entire number of laps sailed before the finish time (n-1)
3. You add a fraction of a lap, as (finish time - time(n-1)) / (time(n) -
time(n-1))
4. You may define a time limit according to the lap length, this could be 5
times the lap length divided by the normal boat speed. When no lap is
finished before this limit, the decimal part becomes .000
5. If you prefer, you multiply the n.nnn value by the lap length to show a
distance.
6. You may also reduce the result to an average time per lap, this is quite
easy to enter in SW

Note that Excel allows to calculate this results, you should link a second
worksheet to produce result in CSV-format for import in SW

Subject: [sailwave] Average lap format

My club has adopted an average lap format for its wednesday evening
series, to try to reduce the occurrence of slow boats being disadvantaged
as the wind inevitably dies.

However, after the first race last night we hit a snag. Even though its a
handicap race, some boats of the same class ended up going round for an
extra lap by virtue of being in the lead at the time. The only prob with
this is that the wind, as predicted died and so the guy who should have
won ended up coming almost last.

So, is there a clever way of forcing sailwave to score a competitor who
has done more laps automatically higher than another sailing the same
class who did fewer laps, even though the corrected times dictate
otherwise.

Hope that makes sense.

Chris

Chris,

FYI - The RYA publish a document describing how to cope when using

Average Lap Racing under the circumstance of one or more boats in a
class completing more laps than others in the class it can be found
at
.
The RYA document recommends that the start & finish line are the
same entity for an Average Lap Race, therefore no There used to be two applications one called Race Day and the other
PROlog, which assisted race teams by helping with the start and
finish of races, both could record a time every boat passed through
the start/finish line. It was then possible to use for a boat felt
to have been disadvantaged by a dying wind and earlier time and
number of laps to produce a result! Both programs output information
in a CSV file format ready for import into Sailwave.
Recording the time each boat passes through the finish line can be
done manually, I have done so in the past for up to 50 boats on my
own, but it is hard work. That’s why my club had PROlog developed
and a computer to run it installed on the committee boat.
Unfortunately, PROlog and RaceDay are no longer available. If you
are interested in the functionality PROlog provided I have a
description that was published in the RYA Race Management newsletter
several years ago now.
Kind regards,

Hi,

I may be able to help. As some of you might know I've just recently been developing an add-on to be used with sailwave, to handle a Grand Prix style finish to enable the LWA to use sailwave instead of their DOS based program. What this does is:-

You run the program and it automatically populates a grid with the competitors from the last opened Sailwave file (You can select a different file if you wish)

You then enter the sail nos each time they pass the finish mark.

You then enter the sail nos into the program using its own built in sail no wizard (Similar to the Sailwave one). But the difference here is you will be entering the same sail no multiple times.

You then highlight the first competitor to finish and click Calculate. It instantly scores the competitors into their true positions allowing for the number of laps - Warning you if a competitor has finished multiple times

You then click the "results to sailwave" and it automatically locates the sailwave program and if it is open then it saves the file that sailwave has open, closes sailwave, inserts the results into sailwave and restarts sailwave with the amended results

This leads to a very efficent system as there is no reentering of competitors, No need to purchase Excel and no need to get involved with importing into sailwave.

I have this all working now but I have some testing and fine tuning to do before I release a Beta - But hopefully will release a Beta next week.

Now I appreciate this is only currently of use, if you are racing a single class as it does not currently accept timings for handicap racing - but if there is a few people that would like this let me know and I'll add it in. I might even be persuaded to build in Phils formula!!

Jon,

That sounds interesting. Please could you look at making it suitable for
handicap racing. This is where our problem lies, i.e. where 2 boats of the
same class in a handicap race finish on different laps.

Thanks,

Hi,

Some documentation for the first Beta release of the Multi-Lap finishing software is here

https://sites.google.com/site/eskdalesite/home/sailwave-multi-lap-finishing-grand-prix

and it can be downloaded from

https://sites.google.com/site/eskdalesite/download

The installer will install the 3 programs Prize List program, Competitor list program and the multilap finishing Program if you choose Typical. If you choose Custom you can select which of the programs you install but they are all small anyway. An uninstaller is included if you want to uninstall.

It doesn’t as yet include Timed finishes, hope to make a start on that next week. There is a known issue at the moment if you have excluded competitors but I will fix that soon.

It does also include a small utility to import simple csv files which we used at the ISAF Youth Nationals to take results straight from the finish boat into sailwave. See Documentation for a bit more info.

~Any feedback would be greatfully received

I may be able to help. As some of you might know I’ve just recently been
developing an add-on to be used with sailwave, to handle a Grand Prix style
finish to enable the LWA to use sailwave instead of their DOS based program.
What this does is:-

You run the program and it automatically populates a grid with the
competitors from the last opened Sailwave file (You can select a different
file if you wish)

You then enter the sail nos each time they pass the finish mark.

You then enter the sail nos into the program using its own built in sail no
wizard (Similar to the Sailwave one). But the difference here is you will
be entering the same sail no multiple times.

You then highlight the first competitor to finish and click Calculate. It
instantly scores the competitors into their true positions allowing for the
number of laps - Warning you if a competitor has finished multiple times

You then click the “results to sailwave” and it automatically locates the
sailwave program and if it is open then it saves the file that sailwave has
open, closes sailwave, inserts the results into sailwave and restarts
sailwave with the amended results

This leads to a very efficent system as there is no reentering of
competitors, No need to purchase Excel and no need to get involved with
importing into sailwave.

I have this all working now but I have some testing and fine tuning to do
before I release a Beta - But hopefully will release a Beta next week.

Now I appreciate this is only currently of use, if you are racing a single
class as it does not currently accept timings for handicap racing - but if
there is a few people that would like this let me know and I’ll add it in. I
might even be persuaded to build in Phils formula!!

Chris,

FYI - The RYA publish a document describing how to cope when using
Average Lap Racing under the circumstance of one or more boats in a
class completing more laps than others in the class it can be found at

http://www.rya.org.uk/SiteCollectionDocuments/technical/Web%20Documents/2007
%20Portsmouth%20Yardstick%20Scheme/2007%205%20Average%20Lap%20Racing.pdf.

The RYA document recommends that the start & finish line are the same
entity for an Average Lap Race, therefore no

There used to be two applications one called Race Day and the other
PROlog, which assisted race teams by helping with the start and finish
of races, both could record a time every boat passed through the
start/finish line. It was then possible to use for a boat felt to have
been disadvantaged by a dying wind and earlier time and number of laps
to produce a result! Both programs output information in a CSV file
format ready for import into Sailwave.

Recording the time each boat passes through the finish line can be done
manually, I have done so in the past for up to 50 boats on my own, but
it is hard work. That’s why my club had PROlog developed and a computer
to run it installed on the committee boat. Unfortunately, PROlog and
RaceDay are no longer available. If you are interested in the
functionality PROlog provided I have a description that was published in
the RYA Race Management newsletter several years ago now.

Kind regards,
Huw

There is, but the formula is not available in SW.
The problem occurs very often for races ending close to sunset.
The boats have to finish the last lap after the fixed time within
reasonable
limits. (n laps)

  1. You record all times a boat rounds the finish mark
  2. You take the entire number of laps sailed before the finish time
    (n-1)
  1. You add a fraction of a lap, as (finish time - time(n-1)) / (time(n)

time(n-1))
4. You may define a time limit according to the lap length, this could
be 5
times the lap length divided by the normal boat speed. When no lap is
finished before this limit, the decimal part becomes .000
5. If you prefer, you multiply the n.nnn value by the lap length to
show a
distance.
6. You may also reduce the result to an average time per lap, this is
quite
easy to enter in SW

Note that Excel allows to calculate this results, you should link a
second
worksheet to produce result in CSV-format for import in SW

Subject: [sailwave] Average lap format

My club has adopted an average lap format for its wednesday evening
series, to try to reduce the occurrence of slow boats being
disadvantaged
as the wind inevitably dies.

However, after the first race last night we hit a snag. Even though
its a
handicap race, some boats of the same class ended up going round for
an

extra lap by virtue of being in the lead at the time. The only prob
with
this is that the wind, as predicted died and so the guy who should
have

won ended up coming almost last.

So, is there a clever way of forcing sailwave to score a competitor
who

has done more laps automatically higher than another sailing the same
class who did fewer laps, even though the corrected times dictate
otherwise.

Hope that makes sense.
