Most Race Officers will no doubt use a dictaphone for recording starts &
finishes. Whilst this works quite often, it is sod's law that when the
recorder has missed a time, there is too much background noise to hear the
timekeeper's voice.
I use a digital dictaphone which effectively has a stop watch on it. I
suspend the dictaphone round my neck and record when it started e.g. 40 mins
after the start.
If there is a problem with the traditional methods, I can replay the
recording, identify the time on the dictaphone and simply add on 40 mins.
The only problem is that the dictaphone does not like damp conditions, but
wrapped in a plastic bag seems to work well and still allows me to press the
minature buttons
