[sailwave] can't connect to ftp account

Thanks v much - I'm sure you're right but this w/e I have gone 'tilt' as far as computers and websites go. While there is a certain mad pleasure in coaxing the system into working (as in getting a vintage car to start) I require my tools to WORK (as in a modern car). I have typed in the necessary info into the boxes and even successfully connected twice but nothing has appeared on the website. It doesn't work so 'Finito'; back to email/noticeboard and maybe some saved hours to go sailing!

PS (weakening a little) the problem may have been in the file name I gave it. There is a help pop up box in Sailwave but it disappears after five seconds and in any case I can't understand it. Do I have to place an empty page on my website to receive the sailwave file (or some such?)

George,

I havn't used the Sailwave ftp facility before - I use `publish to file', then use my ftp client to do the transfer.

But I've been trying it out. I've got it as far as actually sending the file ( SW reports success), but I can see its going to the incorrect directory on the other side. So it needs some tweaking of the parameters.

(Remember to click on OK when prompted)

Malcolm,

Thanks for sharing your difficulties. I have used an FTP client to transfer things from file with my website but once I got it working it was possible to do it more or less with one click through the website application that I use. I thought that Sailwave had this facility built into it and working but if it requires a degree in IT then maybe distributing the results by email will be more reliable.
And I haven't yet tried uploading results to the RYA Portsmouth Yardstick site yet. I have slim hope that that will be painless!

I have successfully published on our club’s website using the following process:

– Agree with the webmaster on a file naming convention. For example, we called last year’s Wednesday series something like PYC_2011_Weds. Make the file name unusual enough that no one else is likely use the same name.

– On the club website, create a page that has a link to http://results.sailwave.com/your_file_name.htm (substituting the agreed-upon file name. Note the underscores in the filenames, no spaces are allowed and case matters)

–In the Sailwave Publish dialogs, set the Destination to the Sailwave results datastore. This sends the html Sailwave results file to Sailwave’s Results server.

Once you have done this, visitors to the club’s website can see the results by clicking on the link. To see an example of this in action, you can go to www.pequotyc.com then click on Sailing and Race Results

There are several advantages to this technique:

–RC can post results directly, no webmaster involvement required once it has been set up.

–As the series progresses, you can publish updated results simply by over-writing the existing results files.

Note that this method is convenient but not 100% secure. It would be possible for a malicious ftp user to replace the file you sent with a different file, which would be displayed in place of your results.

Also there have been occasions when Sailwave’s ftp server does not accept files. This is usually resolved within a few hours if I mention it in this forum.
