[sailwave] date forms

Colin, Having grown up in the UK and moved to the US, I have encountered the
difference first hand. The US always use mm/dd/yy and the UK always use
dd/mm/yy, and to further confuse things Japan uses yy/mm/dd. Therefore
03/05/04 would be interpreted differently depending upon where you live.

UK - 3 May, 2004
US - 5 March, 2004
Japan - 4 May, 2003

If the date was written as 2003/05/04 it would be clear to everyone that the
date was 4 May, 2003

Thanks

Hi Colin,

You are correct, mm/dd/yy or mm/dd/yyyy are the common forms. I rarely if
ever see dd/mm/yyyy here in the states.

Am I right in thinking that in the USA ( at least) the most common short
date form is mm/dd/yy, as opposed to our UK date form of dd/mm/yy? Or do
you use both equally as much...? If the former, it would presumably be
something of an irritant to have to enter dd/mm/yy...? The context here is
dates in start/finish times.

Without reading your previous explanation, I wouldn't have known that
2003/05/04 was referring to May or April, which is why 05May2004 would be my
preferred format! (But it probably doesn't work in Japanese.....)

Hi Mark,

I think I'll change it to yyyy/mm/dd@time and also allow combined date-time
forms of yyyymmddhhmmss and yyyymmddhhmm. There is no real problem allowing
virtually any combination by using a date spec in the series - my worry is
that the spec gets out of sync with the date strings themselves - causing
havoc (as you have illustrated)... By having one fixed format the risks are
minimised. Thanks to everybody for their input.

Regards,
Colin

Sailwave would be able to differentiate between that form and the numeric
form automatically so it's possible I could incorporate both (with locale
support for different languages). I'm attempting to avoid a 'date spec' -
which while it would allow virtually any form, would add the risk of strings
and specs getting out of sync. It could be that I'm worrying unnecessarily
about this though...
